"Mudpaw?" Amberpaw burst out, stumbling out of the stream and padding over to him. "What are you doing here?"
"Hunting mission," Mudpaw answered. He sat down and licked a forepaw, drawing it over his ear. "I could ask the same of you."
"I'm just out for a walk," Amberpaw meowed bluntly. "I felt like a drink."
"Why were you talking to yourself?" the brown apprentice stopped washing himself and gazed at Amberpaw with suspicious amber eyes. Amberpaw narrowed her eyes and looked away.
"None of your business," she hissed, the remembered that Owlbreeze had said another 'Chosen One' had been behind her. Could Mudpaw really be destined to save RainClan along with her? It would make sense. Mudpaw was kind, protective and a great warrior.
Mudpaw shrugged. "Okay...but it's pretty suspicious if you're standing in a stream talking to a rock."
"I'm not talking to a rock!" Amberpaw burst out in annoyance. "I'm talking to SpiritClan!"
She slammed her mouth shut as soon as she realised what she'd just said. Mudpaw blinked in surprise.
"Oh, right, you have medicine cat powers," he meowed, twitching his ears. "Flamepaw says you're weird."
"Good," Amberpaw snapped. "What are you doing here?"
Mudpaw hesitated. "Why do you want to know?"
Amberpaw sighed and told him everything. Sparrowflight's prophecy at the Star Rock, — though she wasn't meant to mention that — her dream with the wailing cats and Owlbreeze's warning, her recent meeting with the grey she-cat and her reminder. Mudpaw listened carefully, occasionally nodding and asking questions, and Amberpaw answered all of them. She trusted Mudpaw with the information...why not, if he was another Chosen One?
When Amberpaw mentioned Sparrowflight's prophecy, Mudpaw shot her an I told you so look, murmuring. "See? Eaglefur is totally evil!"
Amberpaw ignored him; she still didn't believe Eaglefur was evil, even after overhearing the brown-and-white tom's conversation with his father awhile ago. She didn't fully understand Sparrowflight's prophecy yet. Besides...it could be Barkstripe who was the evil one. Or...Mudpaw. Or Flamepaw. But that wouldn't make sense. Mudpaw is a Chosen One. How could he be evil? Flamepaw...I'm not so sure.
She shook her head to clear her thoughts. Nobody was evil. Everything was fine. Was it?
"Nobody is evil!" Amberpaw yowled, half to herself. "The Clan is thriving. Everything is fine. Was is there to worry about?"
Mudpaw gave her a weird glance, like he was a bit confused.
"There is no evil!" Amberpaw repeated at him. "We're fine! Everything is fine! We're all safe and we'll-fed and nobody's dying and — "
"Amberpaw," Mudpaw murmured, a worry clouding in his amber eyes. He rested his tail tip on Amberpaw's shoulder. "maybe you should go back to camp. After all...EmberClan could be lurking around, and I don't think you're...you're...um, I don't think you alright at the moment."
"What do you mean?" Amberpaw shrugged off his tail. She stormed out of the clearing and yowled behind her, "I'm fine, mouse-brain!"
She heard Mudpaw call after her, but Amberpaw kept running. She couldn't think about the bad things anymore — Rippledawn's death, EmberClan's attack, the weight of being in the prophecy on her shoulders. She didn't ask for this! If Amberpaw had a choice, she wouldn't be a Chosen One.
