"Peter, what happened to your arm?"
Oh cyanide apple seeds, please, for the love of fruit, let Peter consume you by the pound. Maybe then, when the earth finally takes him, may he actually feel like he's worth something by sprouting a tree from his stomach, rather than just rot away in the background like he always does.
Act dumb? Play it off like nothing? Was Bucky even seeing what Peter thought he was seeing?
He lifted his head a bit to look at his arm, hoping nothing was showing. Maybe it was just a bug?
Damn "Parker luck", as May would call it.
His sleeve had rolled down a bit while he held his head, not too far, but two large (and irritated) cuts were right out in the open, basking in Peter's uncomfort. Seriously??
"Uhh.." he racked his brain for anything to come up.
"Oh! Ned and I went shooting the other day. Well- MJ invited us originally, but she wasn't able to make it. Something about needing to give her mom a ride home after a past-day surgery. Anyways, there was a little ditch we found a ton of grasshoppers in. There was a bunch of broken crap in there like signs and broken tables I assume people were using as targets, so we just kinda wandered in it a bit to look around. We didn't really shoot much, MJ likes most of that stuff, too loud for me. Off track again- to put it short, I fell on one of the broken signs, Yknow, those weirdly dented one with all of the holes? It got me pretty good" Peter lied smoothly, looking at the cuts on his wrist as if he were impressed at the damage "Ned was screaming louder than I was, he thought I was dying or something" Peter added in all of the random details in hope that Bucky would be too focused on catching up to think about any loopholes, a trick that mostly worked with literally everyone he met.
"Who's Ned and MJ?" Bucky asked calmly.
"Oh, they're in some of my classes, we've been friends for years, they're awesome" Peter meant what he said.
Bucky sat in silence, as if mulling over what he'd said. It was an uncomfortable silence. By the looks of it, Bucky was mostly convinced though.
"Bullshit, Parker" Bucky slammed his fist on the table, causing Peter to jump.
Bucky picked up on the reaction, immediately recoiling in regret. Something seemed to click in his head.
"What? No— I swear, it was an accident" Peter defended.
Sorta a POV change..? Anywhoo, Bucky's thoughts (:
Who in this damned universe had the right to teach this doe-faced infant to lie.
Not very well, admittedly, at least detail wise. Alibi? Spot on, anyone could've fallen for that with a breeze. A jumpy kid who definitely gives off the impression of clumsy, has the perfect personality to name everything precious to him, (In this case, his buddies), and has a perfectly reasonable opportunity to ramble on for his own sake? It was almost flawlessly delivered.
"Almost" being the real kicker.
An oh how Bucky wishes it weren't true.
Now, before any accusations can come into play, he needs to sort out why whatever he sees is worse than let on.
First one, the one that throws the whole thing off balance to raise suspicion, is the MJ character. Giving her mom a ride home? Not old enough, legally at least. And somehow Bucky doubted that Peter would rat out his buddy so easily. It sounded natural at first, maybe Ned's mother/sister/relative/friend, or perhaps just someone older he hung out with? Not while being in the same class, she couldn't be. He lied about his friends.
