Amberkit had never felt so exited in her life. She was finally going to be an apprentice!
She glanced over at Toadfeather, who was sitting at the base of the Rockledge. She already knew that she was to become a medicine cat; it was her sisters that didn't know yet, because Amberkit had been reluctant to tell them.
"Snowkit," Burntstar leaped down from the Rockledge and Snowkit bounded over to him. "From this day forward, until you have received your warrior name, you will be known as Snowpaw."
The newly-named Snowpaw's green eyes shone bright in excitement. Burntstar continued with the ceremony.
"Riverfreckle," he called. The grey she-cat stepped forward and dipped her head at Burntstar. "Riverfreckle, you were mentored by me. I hope that you pass on all I taught you to my daughter."
Snowpaw and Riverfreckle touched noses, and then it was Stormkit's turn.
"Stormkit," Burntstar yowled, and Stormkit hurried forward. "From this day forward, until you have received your warrior name, you will be known as Stormpaw."
Stormpaw's eyes shone with determination; she nodded happily.
"Wolfstrike," Burntstar turned to his deputy; she was already beside him. "You are currently RainClan's loyal deputy. You have mentored two of our best warriors, one who is currently mentor of Flamepaw. I wish that you pass all of your knowledge to Stormkit."
Wolfstrike and Stormpaw touched noses, and Burntstar continued with the ceremony.
"Amberkit," he called. Amberkit padded forward slowly, excitement taking over her. "From this day forward, until you have received your full name, you will be known as Amberpaw."
Amberpaw! She muttered her name a few times under her breath, then continued to listen to Burntstar.
"Toadfeather," Amberpaw's father meowed. Toadfeather padded forward to stand in front of her. "You are RainClan's medicine cat, and I am so glad that my daughter has decided to follow in your footsteps. I expect that you pass on all your knowledge of healing and our warrior ancestors to this young apprentice."
Amberpaw felt her paws tingle as she touched noses with Toadfeather. Burntstar finished the ceremony but leaped onto the Rockledge again.
"As you may already know, the Gathering is tonight," Burntstar announced. "So I must do my duty and choose a patrol to attend. As usual, I will go along with Wolfstrike, Toadfeather, Ivytail, Riverfreckle, Thistlestorm, Moonfire, Foxheart, Barkstripe, Eaglepaw, Honeypaw, Flamepaw, and of course, Stormpaw and Amberpaw. The rest of you will remain and guard the camp."
Amberpaw felt another burst of excitement when her name was called. She was going to the Gathering! Then she noticed with a pang that Snowpaw's name hadn't been called. She glanced over at her sister; Snowpaw's eyes were dark with jealousy. She padded over to Amberpaw and Stormpaw.
"Congratulations," she muttered. "Your first Gathering."
"I wish you were coming with us," Stormpaw meowed sadly. "Maybe we can ask Burntstar?"
"Nah, he probably wants me to stay behind and guard the camp," Snowpaw looked away, her tail flicking slightly.
"Mudpaw and Daisypaw are also staying," Amberpaw pointed out. "You can hang out with them, right?"
Snowpaw seemed to perk up. "Oh, right. I'm going to go find Mudpaw. Bye."
"Bye," Stormpaw called after Snowpaw as she padded away. Burntstar gathered the cats that were going to the Gathering and they all headed out of the den. The moon was full in the sky and shone moonlight down onto the forest, lighting the cat's path.
