A pile of moss drifted past Amberkit's muzzle and she leaped, catching it between her paws and landing satisfyingly pinned under her claws. She looked up, grinning, as her sisters came racing towards her.

"Nice catch, Amberkit!" Stormkit called. She skidded to a stop and flexed her claws. "But I think that I could do better!"

Amberkit rolled her eyes. "Ha. As if."

"Sorry Stormkit, but I could do better than both of you," Snowkit bragged, tossing her black-and-white head. "Seriously, Amberkit, you looked like a dead fox."

Amberkit huffed and frowned at her sister. She crouched and grinned at Snowkit. "Oh yeah?"

"Yeah," Snowkit challenged. "I'm the best at fighting!"

"Says the one who's not even an apprentice yet," Amberkit shot back, preparing to jump.

"Says the one who wants to be a medicine cat," Snowkit retorted. She crouched down, ready to jump, and as soon as she sailed into the air Amberkit dodged and leapt on top of her. Stormkit joined in, batting Snowkit in the side of the head with sheathed claws. Snowkit yelped and jumped onto Stormkit, and soon Amberkit shoved Snowkit away and swiped at Stormkit with a soft forepaw. Stormkit hissed and leapt on top of Amberkit, and Amberkit was crushed to the ground. Soon Snowkit hopped on top of both of them, and then Amberkit was released after Stormkit twisted around to bat Snowkit in the side.

The three kids collapsed on the ground, exhausted. Snowkit jumped up immediately as two figures appeared beside them. One was a dark ginger tom, and the other a brown tom with a white chest and paws.

"Mudkit!" Snowkit squeaked. "What are you doing here?"

"We were watching you play," Mudkit — the brown tom with a white chest and paws — answered, batting a paw at Snowkit playfully. "You're very good, Snowkit."

Snowkit smiled with pleasure. "Thank you. Now let's see your fighting skills!"

"My fighting skills are so much better than Mudkit's!" the dark ginger tom — Flamekit — piped up. "Besides, we're becoming apprentices soon! Foxheart said that Burntstar is organising our apprentice ceremony!"

Stormkit's eyes stretched wide. "Really?"

Amberkit sighed. "I wish I could become an apprentice now!"

"Don't worry," Flamekit flicked his tail at Amberkit's shoulder. "You'll be apprentices soon enough. Who do you want your mentor to be?"

"Burntstar," Snowkit meowed immediately. "He is the best leader ever!"

Mudkit laughed. "True. But your father can't be your mentor, silly."

Snowkit frowned. "Says who?"

"Says the warrior code," Flamekit hissed. "Foxheart told us all about it."

Amberkit looked down at her paws. It wasn't fair that Mudkit and Flamekit could become apprentices before them! She wanted to be out in the forest already, not cooped up in camp all day! It just wasn't fair.

"Look on the bright side," Mudkit suggested. "You'll become apprentices before Silkkit and Mousekit, right?"

"True," Stormkit agreed. "But it's not fair, is it? Why don't we go ask Burntstar if we can be apprentices now?"

"We can't do that!" Amberkit gasped. "We will become apprentices when we're six moons old. We have one moon left. Why aren't you exited by that?"

"We are," Snowkit muttered impatiently. "But still — don't you agree that we should we apprentices now?"
