Amberkit stirred in her sleep, trying not to wake up but waking up anyway. She sat up and looked around the nursery with bright yellow eyes dimmed by the darkness. The whole place smelt like milk and moss.
"Good morning, Amberkit," a gentle voice cooed. Amberkit turned to see a ginger she-cat with a white chest and paws. Her amber eyes shone as she looked down at Amberkit.
"Hi, Foxheart," Amberkit greeted the ginger queen. She turned and noticed that the tortoiseshell pelt of her mother wasn't there. "Where's Moonfire?"
"She's helping Jayflight and Ashtail patch up that hole in the nursery wall," Foxheart replied, standing and stretching in her nest. "Mudkit and Flamekit are outside if you want to go play with them."
Amberkit nodded and instinctively turned around to wake up her sisters and finding out that their nest was empty. She could only faintly smell their scent, as well as the scent of her mother, Moonfire.
"Where are Stormkit and Snowkit?" Amberkit asked, and a new voice spoke up.
"Outside," a cream-coloured she-cat with amber eyes meowed. Amberkit recognised her as Dawnlily. The cream-coloured queen shifted slightly, careful not to wake her two sleeping kits, Silkkit and Mousekit. "I think they went to the elders' den."
"Okay!" Amberkit squealed, hopping out of her nest and running outside. She was instantly bathed in sunshine and she blinked, looking at her surroundings.
The camp was busy today. The brown tabby warrior Barkstripe was leading a patrol that consisted of the black she-cat Ivytail, Patchfoot — a black-and-white tom — and Honeypaw, a pale gold she-cat, out of camp. Wolfstrike, RainClan's deputy, was speaking with Burntstar, RainClan's leader and Amberkit's father, as well as Riverfreckle, a grey she-cat with darker grey spots, Tigerpelt, a dark ginger tom, and Birdwing, a pale ginger tabby tom.
Meanwhile, the white warrior Whitepelt was sharing a mouse with Thistlestorm, a white tom with black-and-grey tabby patches. Silverheart, a silver tabby she-cat, was just heading into camp with Daisypaw, a white she-cat, and Willowheart, a pale brown she-cat, each with prey in their jaws.
Amberkit turned and headed for the elders' den, which was located right beside the nursery. The elders' den was a small cave, with twigs, ferns and bits of bracken woven together to form a wall at the mouth of the cave. Amberkit meowed a 'hello' to the black tom that was dozing outside — Blackpelt. She pushed her way inside and was greeted by four friendly faces.
"Hello, Amberkit," a white she-cat with pale grey tabby patches meowed kindly. "Are you looking for your sisters?"
Amberkit nodded. "Have you seen them, Mistyflower?"
"Those rascals came in here a few minutes ago," a dark grey tabby tom growled. Amberpaw looked down at his leg and winced. Where the tabby's paw had once been, there was now just a stump from when a badger had attacked him. "They were making so much noise I wished I was deaf."
"Cindercloud, those kits didn't mean any harm," a tortoiseshell-and-white she-cat piped up. "They're just kits."
"Kits are annoying, Rippledawn," Cindercloud hissed. "I'm going to go lie down with Blackpelt."
"Alright," a black-and-white she-cat replied. Amberkit glanced up at her eyes and saw that one was all misted over, a kind of blue-white colour.
Cindercloud stalked past Amberkit and pushed his way outside.
"Cindercloud is so grumpy," the black-and-white she-cat, Misteye, complained. "I wish he'd get a brain in his head."
"Shush," Rippledawn hissed. "Amberkit needs help to find her sisters."
