"She asked me if I wanted to date her."
It seemed like whole minutes went by while the world crashed down around you, but in reality, only a few moments passed and the world was just fine.
When you came to your senses after those few moments, you noticed that he sat with his hands in his hair as if in distress.
You felt that it should be the other way around. Asuka was by no means the most popular girl in school, not even among the first years, but she was cute enough and seemed to have a great personality. You didn't see any reason for anyone to turn a girl like her down.
Heck, if you were a guy and she asked you, you would probably agree to it too.
"You're the only one who gets it." He said before you had a reply ready. "The others wouldn't understand why I turned her down and question me about it."
This conversation was not getting any less confusing, but the words 'I turned her down' rang clearly in your ears. You stopped him before he could say more.
"I'm really sorry but... I don't think I understand why either?" You admitted, not willing to let him get further into the conversation on false premises
He looked at you dumbfounded.
"Because she's obviously messing with me? I can't explain to anyone else because they don't know what it was like before high school." He explained and suddenly things started to make sense.
"You think she asked you out to..."
"To bully me, duh. Why else?" He said what you hadn't.
"Tendou... I think she might have been serious." It pained you to say the words, but you could not let him go on believing that.
You could only imagine the reputation he had in middle school, but you knew for sure that in Shiratorizawa it was completely different. In your class he was starting to be well-liked even, especially after the chocolate incident, and you could not imagine that other classes had a different view of him for some reason.
"You have no idea. It happened in middle school as well. Some girl texted me the first day of summer vacation, telling me that she secretly liked me but was afraid of what would happen in school if she told me there.
I believed her and we kept texting. On the first day of school, she was showing all her friends our conversations with everyone going 'eww'. I had just been entertainment." He told you with venom in his voice.
You couldn't believe the lengths these young kids would go to, even though you weren't that much older now. Your heart ached as you saw the turmoil in his eyes as he watched out over the water.
"But everything is different now." You said as you gently placed your hand on his shoulder. " You have friends, people like you at school. I know it might be hard to believe, but I'm sure no one is bullying you."
You were about to say more but swallowed your words. You were afraid of coming across as pitying and that was the last thing you wanted.
"Show me the texts." You said instead and extended your arm expectantly.
He gave you a skeptic look but then scrolled through his contacts to find her and gave you his phone.
There were only a few messages and you learned that she had gotten Tendou's number from Semi. The conversation was very basic. First a little bit of small talk before she confessed that she had asked his number because she was interested in him.
Nothing in the conversation struck you as odd or suspicious, but then again no one would state in their conversation: 'I'm planning on bullying you with this later.'.
