Gina moved away from Kat and went to the coffee table. She took some Kleenex and dried her eyes.

“Sorry.”

“For what?” Kat asked.

“For loving my dumbass son.”

Gina had to smile.

“Well he is a dumbass, at times,” Kat continued.

“But there are reasons why he is the way he is and that is what I need you to understand.”

Gina nodded.

The door to Melissa’s room opened and the two girls came out.

Melissa went straight to her mother.

“Are you crying, Mommy?”

“Mommy is okay. We were just talking about something sad,” Gina explained.

“What was it?” Melissa wanted to know.

Gina kissed her on the cheek.

“Later, okay?”

“Okay. Anyway, Mommy. Brandon will be here in a few minutes and Tyla and I want to know if it is okay if Brandon takes us to the park for a swing and some ice-cream?” Melissa asked.

Gina looked at Kat.

“It is okay with me, but you will have to ask Tyla’s grandmother.”

“Nanny, is it okay, please?” Tyla begged, showing big puppy eyes.

“Those eyes don't work with me, young lady.”

Kat picked up her purse.

“No,” Gina said.

“I will give them some money.”

“Won’t hear of it. I am drinking your refreshments. It is the least I can do.”

She took a $20 bill from her purse and passed it to Tyla.

“Make sure you get everyone a big ice-cream.”

Tyla kissed her Nanny just as Brandon walked into the apartment.

Tyla ran to him and gave him a hug.

Brandon blushed slightly.

“I think Tyla has a little crush on your son,” Kat joked.

Gina laughed.

“I believe she does.”

Brandon walked up to Kat and offered his hand.

“I’m Brandon.”

“Well it is a pleasure to meet you young man,” Kat said, impressed at his manners.

“You too, Mrs. Lambert.”

Kat looked at Gina.

“He is a sweet young man.”

Brandon blushed again.

“Are you sure you don't mind taking the girls for ice-cream?” Kat asked him.

Brandon shook his head.

“I don't mind.”

The two girls took Brandon’s hands and started dragging him toward the door.

“Come on,” they both yelled.

“See you,” Brandon yelled, as he closed the door behind him.

“Now that is something you don't see very often. He seems to be very good with the girls.”

Kat was very impressed with what she saw.

“He is a good boy and he loves his sister and I believe he has taken quite a shine to Tyla.”

“Well she certainly seems to have taken to him,” Kat observed.

“You have done a great job with the kids from what I can tell, Gina.”

There was a moments silence before Gina spoke again.

“You were saying that you need my help?”

“You called Dylan a week or so ago?” Kat asked.

“I did. I don't know what I expected, but I think I just fucked things up more,” Gina said, sadly.

“Dylan was supposed to go to a meeting that afternoon. He didn't make the meeting. Matter of fact we did not see him at all that night. Tyla was at her Aunt Jamie’s, thank God for that.

We must have called his cell a hundred times until we filled his message box.”

Kat shook her head and took a deep breath.

“It was later the next afternoon that we got a call from the police saying that Dylan had been arrested for drunk and disorderly. Luckily, the police chief is a friend, so he just kept Dylan overnight and there won’t be any police record.”
