Luna and I are sitting in the last sun of September. We're out on the grass area around the castle. Luna is making some sort of garland, every now and then she points her wand at the ground and say some spell and up comes the most colourful flowers, in weird shapes and with funny smells.
She is talking about some sort of animal her dad is writing an article about for next month's issue of the Quibbler. I'm not listening, I did in the beginning, but at some point, she lost me. So, now I'm just watching her, she looks so peaceful sitting there between her magical flowers. From her ears some sort of yob is dangling, her hair is messy and full of grass from the hill she rolled down from a moment ago.
Luna and I have spent a lot of time of time together, after I borrowed her my shoes. She hasn't lost them yet. But I have found out, that when she says she lost them, she means that somebody took them. I don't understand why someone would want to hurt her, and in such a childish way. Luna has never done anything wrong in her entire life. She's weird, yes, but that's not a bad thing, wizards and witches must be the really weird to muggles as well, we don't bully each other for that.
I do try to flirt with Luna, but it's like she doesn't really get it. She is too pure for that, I guess. But it is kind of frustrating. I would give a lot for a sneak peek inside her head, but I don't suppose I would find anything but flowers and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks. Even though I do really enjoy the time I spend with Luna, it's hard to be satisfied with just that, I want more, much more.
With Luna, I'm afraid, you just have to be grateful for what you have, she is so flighty. And I am, truly happy. She is so much fun to be around.Luna looks at me with an expecting look, she has just asked me a question, but I wasn't listening.
"I'm sorry, I was somewhere else entirely. What did you say?" I feel bad for not listening, but the subject was so farfetched.
"Where were you?" This is the type of thing that makes her so adorable, she is asking like I did literally leave the place we're sitting.
"In my own head somewhere." Suddenly I feel a bit shy, what would she say if she knew what I was thinking about.
"Why were you looking at me?" So naive and so bold at the same time, it's fascinating. "I just thought you looked pretty, that's all." That was not all.
"That's very nice of you to say." She is smiling. "You look pretty too, actually you look beautiful." I have to take a deep breath; she has no idea of what she just said means to me.
"Thank you, Luna." I can feel the smile on my face, that will most likely not disappear for the rest of the day.The smile did stay there for most of the day. And Ernie is poking me in the hip and have done it for five minutes straight. "Why are you smiling like that?" He's laughing at me, not in a rude way, his excited on my behave. "What happened between you and hmmhmm, that makes you so silly?"
I can't stop smiling.
"Who is hmmhmm?" It's Laura speaking, she is a year older than us, always putting her nose in other people's business.
"No one you'll have had anything to do with, Laura." I try to sound annoyed and cold so that she will stop asking, but I can't stop smiling."Tell me what happened!" Ernie and I are now sitting in the library just the two of us, but he is still whispering, the librarian, Irma Pince, is seriously obsessed with hushing, she should get a hobby.
I take a quick glance around to make sure we're alone, we are, except for some first years three shelves away.
"You're going to laugh at me." I still haven't stopped smiling.
"No, no I won't, I promise." He is leaning closer; he really wants to hear this. I don't have to make him promise that he won't tell anyone else, I know he won't. Ernie and I are really close, and we share a lot of secrets.
"It sounds really lame. But she called me beautiful." Ernie smiles and I can see that his choking a laughter. I hit him on the shoulder.
"No no no, it's not lame at all. It's cute. You're just being really cute about it." He's still keeping down the laughter.
"Maybe I do have a chance with her after all." I can feel a flower bloom in my chest.
Ernie nods, "I certainly think you do."
