“Tasha! Let’s go or you’re going to be late!” I heard my mother yell. I checked myself one more time in the mirror before I grabbed my book bag and headed downstairs.
“Alright. Here, go ahead. Go straight to school. No stopping down the street to talk to those boys.”
“I know ma.” I took the ten dollar bill she was holding out for me then kissed her cheek.
“Be good. Learn something.” She said and I nodded walking out the door. I started walking up the street making my way to my high school.
While I was walking I just chuckled to myself because I had to pass the guys my mother told me to stay away from. I don’t even understand why she trips about me talking to them so much. I mean it’s no secret what they’re doing on the corner but that doesn’t necessarily make them bad people. But of course you can’t tell her that. She don’t wanna hear it.
“Wassup Tasha.” One of them said as I walked by.
“Hey.” I waved a little bit and kept walking until I felt my hand being grabbed slightly. I shook my head chuckling already knowing who it was.
“I know you don’t think a hug is enough ma. Where my hug at?” He said and I laughed.
“My bad. Hi Jay.” I said as I hugged him.
“Going to school?” He asked me.
“Yeah gotta go learn some shit.”
“Go ahead. Nobody wants a stupid broad. I’ll see you later.”
“Alright.” I let him go then went back to walking up the street. Once I got to school I walked inside and went straight to my locker.
“TASHA!” I heard that voice and I started cracking up. Here come her loud ass. I turned to the side of me and looked at her.
“Why you gotta be so damn loud?” I asked my best friend Tishaya.
I’ve known her since we were about 10 years old. As soon as we met we just clicked and we’ve been inseparable ever since.
“That’s just me. What you doing tonight?”
“I don’t know yet. Probably just sit in the house and –“
“Watch ATL. You know every damn word to that movie. How many times are you going to watch it?”
“As many times as I want.”
“Well you’re not doing that tonight. Your little ass coming out with me. New New & Rashad aint going no damn where.”
“Where exactly are you going?”
“One of my cousins is throwing a party and you’re coming I don’t want to hear shit about you don’t do parties and all of that bullshit. You’re partying tonight, we’re going to have a hell of a good time and you’re getting drunk.”
“You want me to go in my house drunk? So you want me to die?”
“No. You’ll be fine because we’re going to be telling your mother you’re spending the night with me. Which you will be so. Just get over it. I gotta go to class. I’ll see you at lunch. “ She kissed me on the cheek then walked off.
All I could do was shake my head. Tishaya is about the bossiest person I’ve ever met in my life. Usually she rubs people the wrong way because she’s so blunt and says exactly what she wants without any apologies but I’m used to her so it doesn’t bother me. I know that’s just her.
