I waited in the waiting room near the emergency room. I was literally shaking as I waited for the doctor's report. I hope she didn't have a severe head injury. My mind kept flashback to when I watched her fall to my floor, the way her head bounced.
I called her parents and attempted to call Ethan. Hopefully he got the text I sent him.
I hope everything's okay. I didn't mean to hurt her like that. I don't know if I can say I had too much to drink but it's complicated.
I don't know if our friendship will ever last. We argue more than we actually do stuff together. We resolve a conflict and then it goes back to the way things were. Then suddenly we're fighting again. Its a cycle and it keeps repeating itself.
I buried my head in my hands. I was trying to think positive and that the doctor would tell me that everything is okay.
I snapped out of my thoughts when I heard footsteps approaching me. A man sat two seats away from me. He wore a gray suit with a Rolex watch. He had icy blue eyes that showed no emotion and dark brown hair. He had an imposing figure.
In his hand, he held a bouquet of daises. He stared blankly at the emergency entrance. He turned around and made eye contact with me.
"Excuse me, are you Sasha?" He asked politely.
"Yes and you must be Ethan right?" I asked. He nodded his head and smiled weakly.
"I'm still waiting on report from the doctor." I explained.
"I hope she's alright. If something happens to her I don't know what I'll do." He smoothed his tie and held the bouquet close to his body.
The doctor came out of the emergency doors, holding his clipboard. "Sasha?" He asked.
"Yes?" I asked. I stood up in front of the doctor and so did Ethan. "She has a concussion but it's minor. She'll able to be released tomorrow or the day after. Once you take her home, I advise you to let her rest and wake her up two hours.Only have her drink warm liquids. No coffee. Also keep her away from loud noises. " He explained thoroughly.
"Will we be able to see her?" Ethan asked.
"Only for an hour. We still have a few test to run." He responded, flipping through papers.
"Thank you Dr." I said with a smile. He nodded his head and walked away.
Ethan followed behind me as we walked down the hallway of the hospital. I stopped at her door and slowly pushed it open. There was another doctor in front of her.
"Look straight ahead please." He said calmly. She followed the light that was directed in front of her eyes. He moved it back and forth and her eyes kept following.
"What's today's date?" He asked her.
"December 12th." She answered softly. Her voice sounded strained and raspy.
"When is your Birthday?"
"What's your name?"
"Good." He said. He turned off the flashlight and put it inside his lab coat pocket. He got up from the chair and faced us. "In case you were wondering, I was only checking if her memory was clear." He explained.
He walked out the room and closed the door behind him.
Ethan set the bouquet of daises on the table next her bed. He leaned and kissed her on her forehead. She smiled weakly. He sat on the chair next to her bed and held her hand.
Rebecca and I stared at each other blankly. Not any of us uttering a single word. I couldn't read her emotions because she didn't display any. Her eyes seemed blank and soulless.
"I should leave you two alone." He said. He rose up from his chair and walked out.
"Rebecca I-" She raised her hand and cut me off. She shook her head and exhaled deeply.
"You don't have to apologize. It isn't worth it..I deserved this. I had time to think when the doctors were cleaning my head up. I know I haven't been the bestest friend. I don't listen to you like you listen to me. I'm judgmental and selfish. I sometimes wonder why you're still friends with me. We can never solve our problems because it just gets worse every day. I'm drained from it really. I know you are too. I'm really want to change but it's just so hard because I go back to the way I was before..."
She started to play with her fingers until she had a cough fit.
"And don't say because Matthew and I rescued you from Josh."
I paced back and forth throughout the room. He laid back on her pillow and sighed.
"I don't know the answer myself Becca. We've been friends for over 2 years. You're like a sister to me. Some days you show me what's right and what's wrong and other days you put me down. Our friendship may seem toxic but I know that one day it will get better. because I never met someone whose past was almost like mine..it's crazy because no matter what you've been through you never turn to alcohol or drugs like me. sometimes I just need a reminder that I can change for the better without using those things. You've been the best influence I had in years. I also know that we both need each other in our lives. Deep down, I just want all this to stop. I want you to stop being judgmental and selfish. I'm tired of it. I'm emotionally drained from it. I know you don't want me to make the same mistakes I've made in the past. I guarantee you I know what I'm doing and you don't have to worry about me anymore. Its really time for me to worry about you because you've been worried about me since forever. All I ask of you is just listen to me for once..and not terrorize me about things." I said boldly.
I never really got the chance to tell Rebecca how I really felt. I mostly listened to what she had to say then my own voice.
"I understand and I will try my best.." She nodded her head and smiled weakly.
"Good and by the way Ethan seems like a really nice guy and I can tell that he really cares about you." I smiled.
I peeked my head out the door and found him leaning on the wall. " We're done, you can come in now."
I stepped aside and he walked in. I closed the door behind and sat down on the couch a few inches away from her bed.
"You had me worried." He said as he moved a strand of hair from her face.
" I'm fine, I just need some rest. I'll be able to go home probably tomorrow." She said as she ran her fingers through her hair.
"Even in hospital clothes, you look beautiful." He said softly. She blushed and smiled.
"You two are such love birds." I blurted out. Both of them started laughing and started chirping. I laughed also and smiled.
I started to think about Brad after that. How I just got up and left him alone. I actually missed him and I'm surprised he hasn't called me yet. He must still be asleep. I should go see him while I still have the chance. I got up from the couch and stood at the head of Rebecca's bed.
''I'll see you later okay? I have a few errands to run. I'll be here tomorrow morning.'' I said. She nodded her head.
''Is everything okay?''
''Yes, everything is fine. I just need to go. I promise I'll call you once I get home.'' I responded while I slipped on my jacket.''Well bye.'' She said hesitantly. I gave her a small hug before I exited the room. I walked out that hospital, feeling a little bit better that maybe things between Rebecca and I will get better. Hopefully we'll be able to mend our relationship for the better.I guess I was finally ready to actaully stand up for myself even if the person was my best friend.
