16 years Later
The triplets are all grown up and Y/N and Thomas are middle-aged adults, which they weren't much a fan of. They were still young, but not as young as they used to be.
Justin had grown up to be just like his uncle. Protective, clever, and brave.
Chuck was still the baby of the group and a huge mama's boy even though he was fully grown. He was loyal, smart, and kind.
Lizzy grew up to be the adventurous girl and grown up to look a lot like Newt. She enjoyed getting into mischief and dragging her brothers along on her little adventures.Your kids were aware of the past and why they live on this small island. But, they were also curious on what was outside of the island and if anything changed based on what you told them. So, one day when the kids got home from school, Lizzy spoke up to her parents about the issue.
"Hey mom," said Lizzy.
"Yes, honey," you said.
"How come no one has ever left the island unless it was to get more supplies for the town and they never say what the outside world looks like?" she asked.
"Lizzy, we've been over this a million times. The sun scorched our world leaving only little land untouched and there are monsters out there," Y/N said as she stored away some groceries in the refrigerator.
"But, mom. It's been like twenty something years. Something has got change about it. Maybe it isn't as bad as you think it is anymore. Maybe there's more civilizations like this one and we just don't know about it," Lizzy suggested.
"That's enough, Lizzy," you say in a little harsher tone.
"Why won't you just accept the fact of possibility?" Lizzy pushed on.
"I said that's enough, Lizzy," you hissed.
"Mom, why won't you listen to me? Are you scared of what's outside? Are you scared that--"
"ELIZABETH I SAID THAT'S ENOUGH!" you screamed. You've rarely used Lizzy's full name. It stunned her. You even stunned herself.
"Lizzy, wait--" you say, but Lizzy ran upstairs to her room, her eyes tearing up.
"Shit," you whispered.
Moments later, Newt came home from work."Love, I'm home!" he called.
"Newt, I screwed up," you say.
"So what if dinner's gonna be a little crispy. I like crispy," he said with a smirk.
"No. I messed up with Lizzy. I screamed at her," you say, guiltily.
"What? Why?" Newt asked.
"She was asking too many questions about what's outside of the Haven and I got a little overwhelmed. It sounded like she wanted to leave to explore it," you say. Newt froze for a moment, then sighed.
"You should probably talk with her then. Clear the air, yeah?" he said, kissing your forehead.
"She hates me. She wouldn't listen," you say, rubbing your forehead.
"Our daughter does not hate you. If we know our daughter well enough, we know she'd understand. Now, go upstairs and talk to her. I'll worry about dinner," Newt said.
"You sure? The boys are gonna be home from Sports at any minute and I know how you like to practice with them," I said.
"One culinary lesson won't hurt them. Now, go," Newt said kissing your forehead and spanking your butt playfully.
You run up the stairs towards Lizzy's room. You knock on the door.
"Go away," you hear Lizzy's voice.
"Lizzy, honey please. Let's talk about this," you said.
"You made it pretty clear you didn't want to talk at all," Lizzy said.
"I was wrong. Please can I come in?" you ask.
"Mmm," you hear her respond. You open the door and see her laying on her bed, her back facing you.
"Look, honey. I only didn't want to talk about it because it brought me back to a bad place. A dark place. When I was your age I was on the lam, fighting in a war and killing zombies. I didn't you to get dragged into it and be brought to the same dark place I did. We came to this Haven to finally be somewhere safe, away from the sun and away from the WCKD organization. When I was a kid, they used us like lab rats. Running through Mazes and cracking codes. I didn't exactly have a happy childhood like you did."
"I'm almost not a kid anymore mom. We turn 18 next week," Lizzy said, turning and facing you. Her eyes red and puffy.
"I know. Don't remind me. Jeez, you're growing up too fast," you place a hand on her cheek and caressed it. Lizzy smiled.
"I remember when you were just a little girl. Your little adventures were wild, but safer and you'd drag Justin and Chuck along with you and play pirates or save the princess. I could watch that for hours while eating popcorn," you say, daydreaming back to when your kids were little tykes running around your feet.
"I miss being a kid too, mom. But, if I'm going to grow up, you have to let me grow up first. You can't hold on forever," Lizzy said.
"I know, sweety. It's just so hard," you say as you start to cry.
"Oh, mom. Don't cry," Lizzy said, pulling you into a hug.
"Then stop growing!" you exclaimed. The two of you burst out laughing as you broke the hug.
"Oh, my sweet girl. What to do with you," you shook your head.
"Mom, I want to explore outside the Haven," said Lizzy.
"And there it is," you muttered to yourself.
"But, I won't go along. Chuck and Justin can go with me. And maybe Teresa. She's almost a grown up and she was around your age when you had all those adventures," Lizzy said.
"They weren't exactly adventures, Lizzy. That's what you fail to understand," you said.
"We can take Uncle Gally with us. Or Grandfather Vince. Or maybe even Abuelito Jorge," Lizzy suggested.
"Your grandfather's are both retired," you say.
"What about uncle Thomas? Or Minho? Even Frypan?" Lizzy asked.
"I don't think your uncles want to be dragged back out there," you say.
"What if I ask?" Lizzy said.
"I doubt they'd say yes," you say.
"So, if I ask them, then I can go?"
"Hmm. If you can convince both of your brothers and an adult to go, then I'll think about it," you give in.
"Yes! Thanks mom!" Lizzy says, engulfing you in a hug then, jumping off her bed and running downstairs.
"Bye, dad!" Lizzy said.
"Where are you going?" Newt asked as he was putting the main course of the meal in the oven.
"I'm going to find my uncles and ask them something. Mom will tell you later, bye!" Lizzy said briskly before shutting the front door behind her.
