Chapter 15: Jaylyn
“Jaylyn.” Jane whispers. “You need to wake up. I have to tell you something and it’s almost time for Axel’s physical therapy.” Jane shakes my shoulders as my eyes open.
“What-what time is it Jane?” I ask, voice low.
“It’s ten thirty.”
“Oh.” I reply, looking down. Axel’s arm is still wrapped around my waist as much to his ability, so I carefully move his arm off of me so I can sit up. Axel moves in his sleep and rolls over as I get up out of bed and follow Jane downstairs.
Jane walks over to the kitchen counter and sits down. “I wanted to tell you before anyone else.”
“What is something wrong Jane?” I ask, grabbing a bowl out of the cupboard and a spoon from the drawer below.
“No, nothing’s wrong, don’t worry.” Jane replies, folding her hands on the counter.
“What is it then?” I get out a box of chocolate cheerios and milk from the fridge, then pour the milk and cereal into the bowl.
“Sawyer and I talked last night and…”
“You’re not kicking me out, right?” I ask the first thing that comes to my mind. She wouldn’t do that, right?
“No, of course not, Jaylyn. You’re with child for crying out loud, and you should know I would never do that to you!” Jane exclaims, throwing her hands in the air.
“I know, it’s just the first thing that came to my mind.” I take a bite of cereal.
“Anyways, Sawyer and I have been talking and we don’t think it’s safe for our family to live here anymore.” She pauses and my eyes go wide. “With two attacks from Carl in the past few months, I think it’s safe to say that Sawyer and I are anxious that he’s going to attack again. Either you, Axel, or our own kids.”
“So what are you saying?” I ask, finishing my cereal. I put the bowl and spoon into the dishwasher and hit the start button since it is now full with dirty dishes.
“I’m saying we’re moving out of Joliet.”
“To where?” I ask. I could never imagine moving out of Illinois, I’ve grown up here, lost both my parents here.
“We’re moving to Amenia, New York. We found a really nice house up there, it has five bedrooms, we figured you and Axel could share a room, one for Sawyer and I, one for Zoey, one for Daniel, and one for the twins.”
“When did you two decide this?”
“We’ve actually been talking about it for the past year, and we finally got an offer
high enough on our house, so we took it and started searching around until we found the perfect house. Sawyer’s gone to Amenia now, making sure the house is good and all. We don’t want to move into a junkyard.”
“Okay. I’m going to go get dressed. I’ll be down shortly.”
“Okay. Axel, Daniel, Zoey and I are going to be leaving in half an hour, and I’ve
arranged for Lindsey to come over and sit with you while we’re gone.”
“Jane, I don’t need a babysitter.”
“It’s for Axel’s sake, honey. He’d freak if he thought you’d be home alone.”
“Okay. I’ll be down in a little bit.” I leave the kitchen and go up the stairs to my
room. ‘Axel and I will officially be sharing a room. I should start packing after I get dressed.’
I walk over to my closet, open the door, and look through my clothes. I pick out a
