Love vs. Lust
We drove in silence for a while but I could tell that something was bothering Gordon. He was unusually quiet and I could tell that he was stressed from the way he moved and kept on glancing at me. We drove into town and he pulled into a little parking lot behind a strip of small shops. I had no idea where he lived so I got out of his car and met him halfway around. He smiled at me but still looked nervous.
“Come on then” he said trying to sound upbeat but failing miserably. I slipped my hand into his and followed him across the parking lot and onto the sidewalk. There were some steps leading a few feet down into the ground and then a door. We went down the stairs and Gordon unlocked the door looking strangely uncomfortable. He opened the door for me and waited for me to enter, once I was inside he walked in behind me and flipped on a light switch.
The apartment was small and dark. It was basically just one big room. There was a bed in the one corner with a wardrobe and a dresser. Closer to me there was a couch with a flat screen TV mounted on the wall. There was a little kitchenette on the other side of the room with a small table and some chairs. There was only one door which I figured had to be the bathroom. There were some windows but they were small and long at the top of the walls, I doubted they were enough to light up the whole place.
“It’s not much but it’s all I can afford at the moment” Gordon said from behind me. My heart almost broke as I heard his words. I turned around and took a step closer to him.
“It’s homey” I replied for a lack of better words.
“You don’t have to lie to make me feel better, it’s awful, I can’t wait to get out of here” he said looking a bit embarrassed.
“Ok, you’re right, it’s awful” I said jokingly making him smile a real smile. My heart warmed and I immediately felt better. I hated seeing him depressed and worried.
“Do you have a medical kit or something?” I asked wanting to clean his lip. It wasn’t bleeding anymore but it looked sore.
“I’ve got some stuff in the bathroom” he answered looking a bit nervous again.
“Ok, why don’t you sit down and I’ll be back in a second” I said as I headed over to the bathroom. I pushed open the door and stepped inside. It was small but clean and neat. I quickly searched through the little cupboard to see what I could find. He didn’t have much so I just took a glass, a washing cloth and some antiseptic liquid and headed back into the main room.
He was standing in the little kitchenette with his back turned to me so I headed over to the table and placed the things on it before walking over to him. He turned around and faced me as I came closer.
“You deserve so much more then what I can give you” he half whispered, his voice sad and filled with regret.
“I completely disagree, you’ve already given me everything I could want” I replied honestly. Material things didn’t matter as long as I got to be with him.
“I’m a loser Gabby, I didn’t finish school, I don’t have a proper job, I don’t have anything to offer you” he said sounding disappointed in himself.
I stepped closer to him and wrapped my arms around his body, pressing myself as close to him as possible. He hesitated for a second but then hugged me back tightly. We just stood there for a while holding onto each other. I pulled away and looked up at him, he smiled at me and then flinched from the pain of his split lip.
