Chapter 7 ~ Delight

Start from the beginning

"Thanks," Walter smiled.

I smiled back, why did this feel so easy? Talking to him felt so natural now.

"When do you want to finish the project?" Walter asked me as we turned off the main street and to the in the direction of our homes. At the next junction we would have to go our separate ways.

"Today?" I didn't want to go home. "If you're not busy of course! Because that would obviously wouldn't work.." I rambled again.

Walter gave me a half smile. "Sure, today."

We slowed down when we got to the junction. I needed to turn left, and he needed to just carry on forward.

"I need to go home, to get the rest of the notes," I said.

"Shall...I....come too?" Walter's cheeks had actually gone a little pink.  Awww.

"Okay," I grinned. I didn't want to go home to face my dad alone anyway.

Students were streaming past us still, and most of them turned round to give us curious looks as they passed. Sometimes Walter would glare back at them and they would snap their heads back round and fasten their pace. I knew the soft side of him, and to be honest I was very glad.

We started walking left and were about to cross the road when Walter's younger brothers showed up in the crowds of high school kids.

"Where are you going?" Giovanni said, raising an eyebrow at Walter. He gave me a half smile. It seemed I was on his good side too, unlike the dinner lady this lunchtime.

"Getting some notes," Walter replied.

I looked up and caught Eli's eye. He gave me a small nod. Probably telling me to keep my side of the deal and lie to Walter about his apology to me. Why did he want me to say no anyway? Did he really just like winding up his brother?

"Oh right, well -"

"See you at home," Walter muttered at his brothers, before grabbing my arm and literally running across the road on the red man

"They were going to follow us, and I don't know about you, but I'm not in the mood for that." Walter explained before I had a chance to ask.

 Fair enough.

******

"Got it!" I yelled from upstairs, holding my notebook. Walter was waiting for me downstairs, and I was sort of grateful because my room was a mess.

While I had gone to fetch my notes, I had done a quick search for my dad, I found him sleeping on the floor in his own room, halfway to the bed. I felt a little bad for him, but I wasn't going to help him and wake him in he process.

"Did Eli ever apologise to you?" Walter asked me when I got back down.

What should I do? I couldn't lie to him, but I had told Eli I wouldn't say yes.

Walter looked down at me when I didn't reply.

"No," I bit my lip as soon as I said it.

Walter didn't seem to notice because his stance changed immediately. He clenched his fists and a muscle jumped in his jaw.

"The little shit," he growled underneath his breath.

He needed to calm down, surely all this anger wasn't physically good for him? Before I knew what I was doing, I placed a hand on his tensed arm.

He didn't even notice. Well, that was silly. I'd seen it done in so many films, but Walter was obviously a different case.

So I hugged him. And that had immediate effect. Walter's chest stopped heaving and I felt his muscles under his shirt relax. I didn't let go, I was loving the feel of his toned chest and abdomen. Then he wrapped his arms gently around me too, as if he thought I would pull away from him if he held me. If I had a choice, I would stay standing like this forever. But that wasn't going to happen. Duh.  Walter and I let go of each other at the same time. I could tell he was looking at me, but i didn't have to guts all of a sudden to meet his eye.

"Come on, let's go," I said.
