Chapter Twenty-six

Gabriel had more nerve in his little pinkie than Theodore did in his entire body.

Quite literally.

For said finger started running slow circles on the back of Theodore's hand, even ventured to his wrist.

It was a soothing gesture- his touch  so soft and gentle that for a second Theodore thought he was imagining it.
He thought he really ought to be, or dreaming.

Gabriel's left hand joined the party, a featherlight caress on his cheek.

Yeah, somebody pinch him.
Or call the police, perhaps the fire brigade. An ambulance for his poor heart?

His touch was soft enough to push away, his movements slow and intentions clear enough to bring to a halt. His eyes held the promise that it was alright to.

Theodore didn't.

And so their lips met. Soft and sweet and for the briefest moment.

The car radio, that had been playing for the birds and bees and summer sky, suddenly went up quite a few notches in volume and down and up again.

Theodore's already racing heart beat extra wildly in his chest as he and Gabriel jumped in their seats in surprise. Their heads banged together but Gabriel felt too happy, perhaps euphoric, even, to feel any pain.                                                                 Laughing, he kissed Theodore's forehead exactly where they'd collided and then his lips again.

The radio- disturbed by either Gabriel's magic or simply by the energy between the two boys trapped in the small confined space- switched stations every other second, alternated by static noise.

It was a stupid metaphor for Theodore's current state of mind.

His head was spinning, and not just from a possible concussion.
It was all a little overwhelming; too much, too soon.

No, not too much.
Frankly, Theodore wanted everything Gabriel had to offer, he just wasn't sure if he should, and if he could offer anything in return.

Right now he couldn't even properly reciprocate a simple kiss.

Naturally, Gabriel noticed.

He pulled away, eyes cast downward, cheeks red and hands now folded in his lap. "I'm so sorry," he said softly.

Theodore was at war with his heart and his heart just won a battle, he didn't put up much of a fight this time.

"It's alright. I've got a hard head and besides," he touched the small bump on his forehead, "You've already kissed it better."
