My Moment

“Melanie,” Augustus’s husky voice says. It is the middle of the night and I’m still awake. I turn over slowly to see Augustus’s gorgeous face. “Can’t sleep?”

I move towards him until both our chests are touching each other.

“What’s in your head, newbie?” he asks softly, stroking my Xiucoatl tattoo.

“The battle in a few hours’ time,” is my automatic answer.

He sighs deeply. “We’re going to be okay, newbie. Believe me.”

I want to so badly tell him the truth. I don’t want to leave him. But I know that it is not up to me.

“I know,” I whisper, snuggling into him. “What happens if Aurora’s egg hatches? Will it be a mermaid-Siren hybrid?”

“I don’t know,” he murmurs. “I’m not going to give up on it, even if it needs to consume human flesh. I am going to try to be the best father the baby is going to have.”

I smile. “Then we can tell him all about his true mother.”

“Him?” Augustus questions with raised eyebrows.

I shrug. “I hope it’s a boy. I would name him Aelius.”

“Aelius? What kind of name is that?”

I scowl at him. “Why not?”

“What if it’s a girl?” he challenges.

I think about it for a moment. “I think I’ll leave it up to you to decide. You sure do look like daddy’s little princess material.”

He chuckles. “It’s strange to hear it come from you.”

“What?” I ask. “Calling you daddy?”

“Then you are mummy.”

I shake my head at how lame he sounds. We spend the next few minutes just enjoying the moment. I can’t help but think of my past before I met Augustus.

I think of my earliest memory.

“Nate,” I screamed, refusing to leave my bed.

My twin brother burst into my room with a crazy look on his face. “What? Is there a burglar in here?”

I cried even harder, making Nate panic even more. We were both home alone since mum and dad are working late. Nate and I convinced our parents that we are old enough to stay alone in the empty house. At this very moment, I regretted it.

“Mel? Tell me why are you crying?”

He walked over to my side of the bed, trying to see anything out of place from my perspective. Instantly, I hugged him, seeking comfort from him.

Nate looked surprised, but let me hold him until I calm down.

He cleared his throat. “Melanie, I think you can let go of me now.”

I obliged. He took a few steps away from me so I couldn’t attempt to reach out and hug him again.

“Now tell me why were you crying.”

My eyes started to droop. “I had a nightmare.”

I could hear his footsteps going further from me. Fear overcomes me again.

“Nate!” I pleaded. “Please stay with me. Please.”

He turned to look at me, weighing his options. I fell asleep before I knew whether he stayed with me at night or not.
