Christmas. It was the time when families came together, to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, possibly the most influential person ever born on this planet. I wasn’t a believer in God, so the religious significance of Christmas wasn’t something that I was interested in. But yes, I did believe that Christmas played a crucial role. It got families together; it kept alive the innocence in children, it kept alive the love between families. Every year, this time of the year brought back smiles on the faces of billions. It was magical in its own little ways.

For example, our family had people from many religions, believing that we were all humans first and foremost. So, we just celebrated every occasion with the same enthusiasm, no matter which religion or region it belonged to. On Christmas, we had a particular set of our customs and rituals we followed. In the mornings, Sohail came in my room, and we both went to Arbaaz’s and Malaika’s room. Then we all bombarded Salman, and in the end would find Arhaan already wide awake in his room, eagerly waiting for his presents.

We all sat in pajamas all day long. Work, dressing up, taking stress or tears was strictly prohibited. Then having some coffee or hot chocolate, we all went to the Christmas tree me and Arhaan decorated, and started with the presents. First, we gifted our staff the year’s ’big box’. It was nothing but a collection of gifts for all our staff, just to signify our gratitude and thanks for their services and loyalty. This year we had gifted them watches, and they had seemed to love it.

Then started the event of family gifts. It was usually chaotic, because we all dug for our gifts and spoke at the same time, someone hug-tackling the other, while someone else grinned at his partner. I had received everything from shoes, to jewelry, to bags, to even a custom made leotard. Yes, I loved every bit of it, not because it was mainly Chanel or Valentino, but because I knew everyone had tried their best to make everyone around happy.

I had spent two days trying to figure out all the gifts and buying them. Out of desperation and no choice left at all, I bought them some of my favorite cologne, like Hennessy, Armani code, and Burberry. I had to spend hours to get the right scent for the right guy, and then pack it up and write a message for all of them. Malaika was the easiest to decide for, because I went into the Marc Jacobs store and saw the blue bag and just knew it was meant for her. For Sam I decided to get a pair of shoes I would have for myself if I wasn’t broke thanks to the Christmas gift hunting. Arhaan- oh well I couldn’t resist getting three gifts for my little champion. One was a patterned pillow, the second a remote controlled car, and third a color set. Thankfully all my family loved their gifts, and I let out a sigh in relief.

We spent the noon in front of the screen in the theatre room, watching movies back to back while hogging popcorn and nachos. We were watching Ice Age, Madagascar, home alone- all my favorites. I mean, which sane person did not adore those movies?

Anyways, it was well beyond six now, and we were gathered around in the living room. I was on the floor, my legs dangling on Sohail’s lap on the couch. Sam was beside him, and Arhaan was sitting beside both of them, too busy playing with the game he got from his parents. In their defense, it was educational too. Arbaaz was sitting on the love seat, with Malaika on his lap, playing with her bracelet. Salman was sitting on the other seat next to me, his legs spread across the couch. We were all bored now, not knowing what to do next.

“I’m hungry.” I groaned, looking at Salman.

“What, I’m bored.” He yawned. I rolled my eyes at him and tried to plead with my eyes. It was one of our non-sense rituals for Christmas. We all cooked food for tonight, Salman being the main chef. We all were assistants and helpers, with him cooking. Malaika could cook too, and she did that a lot. Salman on the other hand never got the time to cook much, and we missed his taste. Therefore it was him who was gonna cook for us tonight.
