"Did you know that 'french fries' are not actually French?"
You lifted your head at Tendou's words. "Really? Then who was the weirdo that called them French?"
"Apparently 'french' comes from the verb 'to french' which is the way the potatoes are cut to make fries. According to the Belgians at least, that is." Tendou chuckled.
"So, french fries are Belgian?" You said, skeptically. "Way to make things confusing."
"Did you find anything?" He questioned as he turned his attention back to the screen of his laptop.
"Only if you think Belgian cows who can only give birth by cesarean is an appropriate subject?" You sighed. Maybe picking a boring country wasn't the best idea after all...
He snorted in reply. "I'm glad I get to read about fries and chocolate."
You spent another half hour researching after which Tendou got up and walked towards the living room, checking out the TV stand. You watched as he crouched down in front of it and studied its contents.
"A Playstation 3 and an Xbox360? I thought your parents would be against those kinds of things." He said as he browsed the games that accompanied said consoles.
"On the contrary, they make excellent birthday gifts for parents who don't know what to get their kid. I've got the Playstation, PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox in storage as well. Oh, and a Dreamcast and a bunch of the handheld ones as well." You told him as you shut your book and also got up from your chair at the dining table.
"A Dreamcast and a Gamecube? Your parents are thorough." Tendou stood up and held up one of the game cases. "Wanna play Dynasty Warriors?"
Two hours later you were both sitting on the couch and had moved on from Dynasty Warriors to Street Fighter IV.
"Pick someone else for a change! Where's the fun in kicking my ass in the same way over and over again?" Tendou complained as he let himself fall back on the couch.
"You just need to get better." You said triumphantly. "Do you want to keep trying?"
He sat up straight and checked the time on his phone. "I uh... I think it might be best if I went on my way home."
"Oh, already?" You asked, disappointed.
"Yeah, we're not going to work on the project anymore today right?" He asked as he leaned forward to place his controller on the coffee table.
"I wasn't planning to, but we can keep playing? My parents won't be home until late so there's no problem on my end." You assured him. Yesterday you had made sure to ask your parents about their plans for the day in detail.
"Really? That's okay with you?" He asked you and you thought you detected relief in his voice, but it could have just been wishful thinking on your end
"Of course! I'm having so much fun! Is it okay with your parents?" You asked. Tendou had told you before that his parents didn't really care about anything but his grades, but you had no idea how that factored in to being away from home. Was he allowed to do whatever he wanted as long as he came back with a perfect grade at the end of the day? Or was he not allowed to go out often because they wanted him to study all day?
You made a mental note to ask him about it if the subject ever came up and he seemed comfortable to talk about it.
"They didn't really say anything about when I should be home, but as long as they believe I'm working for school they shouldn't care too much." He replied, not seeming a hundred percent sure of his own answer.
