@WattyAwards2013 Well, to be honest I'm not up to speed on what the Wattys are or how they work, although I'm very happy to participate. I have mostly focused on my writing (and the soundtrack for my novel) and on corresponding with individual fans and haven't looked in as much depth as I probably should at community events like this one. If you have general information about how I participate and what is required of me, that would be great. Thanks for keeping me informed. Nas
Okay, this is an announcement you don't get every day, not even here on Wattpad. One of the things that's great about this site is that it's free. Well, now you can get yet another freebie, but this one isn't something you read. As a special project to add an extra dimension to my novel "Luck and Death at the Edge of the World" I have created a complete soundtrack album that is free to stream or to download in MP3 format. The album includes fourteen tracks by artists in eight different countries, including several independent musicians, a film composer, and even a classical composer (!) who's also a music professor. The tracks range from slow and dreamy to uptempo and funky. And there's one track that I created myself. I'm also inviting anyone and everyone to get involved and remix the tracks themselves. If you create your own mix and send it to me (or send me a link where I can find it), I'll post it on the soundtrack home page (if you want me to) for everyone to hear. You'll find the whole thing at http://luckanddeathsoundtrack.wordpress.com/ So what are you waiting for? Visit the soundtrack page, give it a listen, and drop me an email afterward to let me know what you think. As I've said several times: with Luck + Death, the novel is just the beginning. I look forward to hearing from you guys. Nas
Where the science meets the fiction! Do you ever wonder about how realistic some of the tech is that you read about in science fiction. I keep several blogs that relate to my novel Luck + Death at the Edge of the World. One of them, HomoArtificialis dot com deals with exactly this issue, looking at the real science behind the futuristic technology in the story. (The name refers to an artificial person, just as "homo sapiens" is the scientific term for a natural person.) In Luck + Death people can--for a price--have their mind uploaded into a synthetic body. Is anyone working on this in real life? You bet! What about the componenets for those synthetic bodies, like artificial organs? We already have some of those and more are on the way! Luck + Death also features a character who's an artificial intelligence. Any progress on that front? Don't guess, find out what's actually happening. Brains linked to computers? Killer robots? Artificial vision? They're all either something we have now or something scientists are working on. All of these technologies and more are covered on the blog. Remember: with Luck + Death, the novel is just the beginning! Nas
More free goodies! The Luck + Death home page now has several more videos, this time about current work on a universal translator, just like the kaikki Gat uses in the story. You may be surprised by just how far we've come since the imaginary universal translator showed up on Star Trek and elsewhere in science fiction. Now it's being tested on the battlefield and as a tool for training surgeons in foreign countries--not areas where you can afford to have a mistake in your translation. ** Get it here: http://luckanddeath.wordpress.com/ld-bonus-material/#UTranslator
Big news for science fiction lovers -- 3 Awesome Items. (1) First, part of what we all love about Wattpad is free reading. Well, here's some more: International Speculative Fiction is a quarterly magazine distributed on the internet that features incredibly high quality science fiction, fantasy, and horror for exactly $0.00. Doubt it? Last year one issue had three authors who, among them, had won two Hugo Awards, two Nebula Awards, two World Fantasy Awards, a British Fantasy Award, and a Science Fiction & Fantasy Translation Award. That's freaking awesome--and it's free! So try it out and tell your friends. ** Get it here: http://internationalsf.wordpress.com/ (2) Second, one of the three authors in that issue of ISF I was just talking about was me. Late last year ISF published my story "Siren Songs in Deep Time." You can read it in ISF issue number 2. ** Get it here (direct link to the PDF): http://internationalsf.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/isf-2-december-2012-execution-version.pdf (3) Finally, after publishing my story, the editor-in-chief at ISF told me that the magazine's non-fiction editor was leaving to work on other projects. He invited me to become the new ISF non-fiction editor and I happily accepted. It's a shiny world out there. Nas
@nashedron Dear Nas, I'd be very happy to read your novel, it sounds very interesting! I'm fine with swearing, just as long as I'm not using it! I definitely tell you my opinion after a couple of chapters as I know I would like my readers to do the same for me. Have an epic time on Wattpad! ~ Maggie
@Coyote13 Hi Maggie! It's good to hear from you. I looked at your profile and I see that you don't go in for swearing, so I think it's only fair to let you know that my book does have some. Still, if you're curious to read it then you're very welcome to do so and I hope you'll let me know what you think after you finish a chapter or two. If you prefer not to read it after what I've said, no hard feelings. No novel will be to every reader's taste. Either way, I hope you enjoy your time on Wattpad! Nas
@crashfm Thanks Saoud--and be sure to see my reply to your comment on Chapter 21 of Luck + Death, which has a link to more content. Nas.
