I fell in love with medieval England after reading Sir Walter Scott’s “Ivanhoe” in my sophomore year of high school, but my interests soon turned towards the Dark Ages when the formidable Vikings harassed the civilized world once Hollywood released such blockbusters as “The Vikings,” “The Longships,” and “Erik the Viking.” Add to the mix “Alfred the Great,” “Prince Valiant,” and “King Arthur,” and an incurable romantic anglophile was born. Why did I focus on Alfred the Great and King Guthrum? I chose these two formidable characters because they were fascinating. This was a time of conflict and change, when Christianity was replacing the pagan religion, and the feared Vikings no longer plundered the fertile country of Britannia but remained and settled the land. In addition to the religious conflict, there were also petty Kings who coveted the throne, not only King Alfred’s crown, but King Guthrum’s as well. Throw into the mix, illegitimate offspring and you have all the makings for a great story. http://www.maryannbernal.com http://www.facebook.com/pages/Omaha/The-Briton-and-the-Dane/279770885805 http://twitter.com/#!/BritonandDane http://maryannbernal.blogspot.com http://www.linkedin.com/pub/mary-ann-bernal/33/5b/a9a http://www.litunderground.com/MaryAnnBernal.html

@IdaBeyer You are most welcome. Thank you again for your interest. Have a blessed evening.
@maryannbernal Thank you for enlightinig me, this is a new information, because in the danish recoards it tells nothing of this ;)
@IdaBeyer Guthrum, founder of the Danelaw Although it's unknown how Guthrum consolidated his rule as king over the other Danish chieftains of the Danelaw (Danish ruled territory of England), what is known is that by 874 he was able to wage a war against Wessex and its King, Alfred. By 876, Guthrum had been able to acquire various parts of the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria and then turn his attention to acquiring Wessex, where his first confrontation with Alfred took place on the south coast. Guthrum sailed his army around Poole Harbour and linked up with another Viking army that was invading the area between the Frome and Trent rivers which was ruled by Alfred.[1] According to the historian Asser, Guthrum’s initial battle with Alfred resulted in a victory, as he was able to capture “the castellum” as well as the ancient square earthworks known as the “Wareham” where a convent of nuns existed. Alfred was able to broker a peace settlement, but by 877 this peace was broken as Guthrum led his army raiding further into Wessex, thus forcing Alfred to confront him in a series of skirmishes that Guthrum continued to win. At Exeter, which Guthrum had also captured, Alfred made a peace treaty with the result that Guthrum left Wessex to winter in Gloucester.
Hi! I'm really interrested in your stories, but there is something that confuses me, and that is how you connect Guthrum and Alfred, because in all danish books it only says that he's the first king of denmark (or actully only Jyllinge and sønderjyland) and it was only his son Harald Blåtand and later again Svend Tveskæg that had anything to do with england ;)
