I was born in Rio de Janeiro and knew I wanted to become a writer since I was a teenager. After traveling through South America, North Africa, Mexico and Europe in the 1960s, I settled in Brazil and wrote lyrics for Brazilian musicians like Raul Seixas, Elis Regina and Rita Lee. I wrote my first book, Hell Archives, in 1982. Four years later, I made the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, a 500-mile road in northwestern Spain. My experiences there would become the basis of The Pilgrimage. I wrote The Alchemist, a story about a shepherd on a spiritual journey to the Egyptian pyramids looking for a treasure, the following year.
