This is a simple enough scenario, but I feel like it describes regret - no matter if you put out the fire, it still has burned.
I actually really like that fragment at the end. It's sort of stilted...awesome!

Like a shattered glass. You can put it back together with sweat and blood but the cracks will now always be present.
I love it! Terry Pratchett (I can't spell his name) has written a few with death as a character, and they're brillliant, it's hilarious
