The Gullah are ancestors of Africans who were brought over aboard slave ships from the West Indies. Their culture resonates throughout the lowcounrty of South Carolina. The Gullah people have strong beliefs in the supernatural. The fear of boohags and haints is a very real part of the voodoo religion that many once subscribed to. These beliefs led to stories and folktales being passed down throughout the generations.
