Losing Faith in Watty Readers

    I agree totally. :)

    If I had more time, I would go round helping people improve - i just don't have time though. Several times, i've considered makinga new account and giving anonymous critique, but again, no time. I do tryand find an undiscovered gem each week and promote it on my profile each week though.

    @HomeInMyHeart Agreed! Some people do that and it's great but yeah not many have the time. If I start reading something then I'll leave a comment etc but I don't have the time to look!

    That's great with the undiscovered gem thing :)

    @HomeInMyHeart Toatlly agree with you. I mean romance will always come out on top because, well I don't know, everybody's looking for it? And it's entertaining to read - heck- I perfer to write them. However, when people write, I think they feel like their story has to be based on hormones! Which is not true, because people that get your writing will love it! If I ever get to the watts hot list I'd let people know what's up. As for high school romances, a lot of wattpader's are probably in high school- I am, hehe- , and you know high school is- well- high school. Besides, I doubt any of the writers on the watt's hot list will be able to have a future in it, and actully writing books, without execcisive writing classes- and even that won't help them... lol

    @Cierra I know like three people that have been on the hot list and have published books! That was actually quite a mean comment, how would you feel if someone said that about you if you were on the list? I'm also looking into getting an agent and publishing too.

    Some of the comments that I have read here are absolutely disgusting and are tinged with jealousy. Wattpad promotes new writers and fair play to those that come out on top! They are no toilken? Who cares?! They are writers in there own right and dont have to hide in the shadows of published writers! I dont know if you have seen some of the published works out there today...its very hard to find a good read that isnt full of cliches...thats what wattpad is for...

    @Insane_Dreamer

    I agree, completely.

    I mean, what isn't cliché these days?! We're only teenagers, most of us. So we're not..J.K.Rowling or Tolkien or James Cameron or something! There's a reason people read the books Wattpad promote. They like those books, and if they didn't, yet wouldn't read it. Everyone has different taste. Who cares if their grammar isn't perfect? No one's grammar is perfect. And going back to the fantasy stage. You can write whatever you want to write. If it's not fantasy, doesn't matter. People write for pleasure, not to get published or noticed. Sure, that's nice, but a lot of people write because they enjoy writing.

    @MissHoranette thank you at least someone out there has some common sense. This isnt some contest...for many of the writers on here, its a means of escape and I think its ignorant to belittle their work.

    The person who intiated this forum and the people who have wrote such horrid comments seem to forget that some people who are excellent writers suffer from dyslexia. Should they not write because they cant spell or there grammer is off!

    There is no point having a crap story with perfect grammer. I would much rather read a riviting story filled with errors!

    @Insane_Dreamer

    Same to you, someone agrees with me! How would the people who take down successful Wattpad writers feel if their story got to the top, and we criticised them for grammar or so and so? And yes, the dyslexia thing.

    People can write what they want! This is a site for encouraging, not taking people down. It's for improving your writing! What of some people look at this forum, people with imperfect grammar or a top story? You can't please everyone!

    Yes, I Wouod rather read an exciting plot over a boring line and perfect grammar.

    @Insane_Dreamer Haha I have a lot of editing to do first, all my stuff is a first draft but hopefully I'll get it done soon(ish) and then look for an agent :)

    Very well said. It's nice to see that some people recognise that wattpad is for everyone, of all abilities! Others need to be a little less judgemental and if you don't like something, move to another story!

    I'm really disappointed with how no-one ever votes or comments or anything. Even if they don't think the story is good, they could give constructive criticism. My story went up about 2,000 reads and I only got 6 comments and 8 votes. I would at least want people to just acknowledge me and give me feedback.

  • MissHoranette

    @GypsyFair

    I sort of agree. I receive random fans every day and I never know what for. I don't really mind about the votes. Some people vote automatically even though the story isn't to their liking. Constructive criticism is better than pressing a button, commenting is taking the trouble to encourage and advise the author.

    I don't know why I'm talking so posh, Harry Potter 7 Part 2 is on and Snape is talking all strange, that's probably why.

    @_DurdensLover honestly, i'm really seeing a pattern in what's popular and praised and what's unpopular and ignored. it's like EVERYONE wants the cliches, while those that write the unusual, and the REALLY good ones at that, (well, there are some exceptions to that) are ignored. no one seems to like the orginial ideas anymore. for the exceptions (The Cellar and You'll Always Be Mine by princessharley to name a couple), i personally think that if THOSE are popular among the cliches, there is a chance for the other orginal ideas. i'm even going to try entering the watty awards this coming year to show that there are some people who don't use the cliche, overused ideas.

  • a_colorful_dreamer

    @pink896heart I, personally, think that cliches aren't such a big deal. If it's a nice story that's written well, and there's SOMETHING that goes on, then it shouldn't matter if it's "cliche" or not. That's one thing you have to learn--"Cliches" are the things that are "in" right now. You can't just judge a story solely on whether it's cliche or not. For me? I don't care if its' cliche. If it's written well, if it's exciting, and if it holds my attention, that's all that matters.

    What does bother me, though, is how people don't seem to "Just read" any more. It's always "if you comment, I comment." Not to mention that the comments are usually full of crap. Hell, I had someone comment on my story and get the name of the main character wrong. At this point, I've pretty much given up trying to make my story "popular." I already have readers--not as many as I'd wish to--but I still have some. And really, that's all that matters(:

    Okay so this conversation has been going on for five long and drawn out pages and none of it has made a blind bit of difference to anyone else.

    First of all... All this stuff about cliches? PLEASE STOP! There. Is. No. Such. Thing. As. A. Cliche. There are popular genres and story lines but no one here can write a definition of a cliche that everyone will agree with. For example is someone writes a book about a werewolf or a vampire suddenly it "Its cliche" REGARDLESS of however much effort the writer put into putting words on the page, REGARDLESS of how long it took them to write it. Because it has the word vampire in it, its cliche.

    If a character in a book is popular, thats cliche as well. If she's not popular its cliche, if she's a geek its cliche, if she's average then she's boring and picked at for having no fire, if she's got an attitude thats cliche as well because of the 'overused bad girl image.'

    If one of her parents are dead, its cliche. If she has a happy home life its cliche, if she has a bad home life its cliche. If she's an alpha, or is she's blind, or if she loves someone, or gets married, or goes to high school apparently, according to some people on wattpad thats all cliche.

    So that means my character would have to be neither popular, geeky or in-between. She cant be pretty or like anything about herself, and she cant think herself ugly either so she has to be in between. She cant be in high school nor could anyone ever possibly fall in love with her AND she couldn't possibly ever have a happy ending.

    Guys my point is that cliches are subjective. No one will ever NOT complain. You cant please all the people all the time. Yes, its annoying to see the same "give away titles" and to see the same bad grammar and sometimes, yes, it does irk you and I have been know to leave rough critiques....But at the same time its wrong to put all stories with the same genre in the same 'cliched" box... If you give them a chance they might surprise you.

    Hmm...I agree with @MusicIsMySoul The people who write here aren't professionals (Well, for the most part, they aren't.), so grammar errors will be found here and there (myself included), but that doesn't mean that their stories will turn out horridly. I've read a lot of stories here that has had lisps in grammar (not really, but you understand what I mean), but if you continued to read it, it's, quite frankly, well done. If you really wanted the best read in the world, take a stop to the library, go to Barnes and Nobles, do whatever. No one will stop you from getting away from this site, and there certainly wasn't a rule against it. With that said, everyone, have a good day.

    I feel that's a bit unfair to people who just came on Wattpad to write out their ideas. Cliches are popular ideas, staring ideas if you will, and become your own once you start putting you're ideas and your take on it. Seriously, the cliche only sucks if the writer didn't put one shred of effort in their setting, research or characters. But if the plot is good, the grammar is okay and the characters are fun to read about, then the cliche isn't a problem anymore.

    @MusicIsMySoul is so right. In one of her fanfics (I love them so much XD), her OC fit's the bad girl cliche, but when you actually read what happened to her, then it's easy to see why she acts that way. Her story is awesome! But if you let that one cliche stop you, you may never know why it's a good read. Wattpad is a place to write you're ideas and have people read them. I rather have true fans that like and help me along my story than a ton of them who probably don't even know what's going on.

    @SallyRose Aww thank you :) Honestly you're an amazing fan :D But, back to the matter at hand, I stand by what I said - defining a cliché is impossible so don't try and let people write what they want to write :)

    @Cierra You don't think people won't make it even with excessive writing lessons is mean? Really? Well, it is. Wattpad is a FRIENDLY place for everyone. Of course feedback is how you improve, but constructive. Yeah, I got you didn't say everyone but every single person here is learning, so be respectful.

    Here's the code of conduct that you agreed to when signing up. Might be a good idea to look it over.

    Thank you.

    @pink896heart Thanks hun. I think the problem is that an original idea quickly gets used. Before I wrote Silence I hadn't seen any mute stories (although after I was told there was a werewolf one) but now there's quite a few. Same with The Cellar. I've had loads of people telling me someone has copied my story, and a few have -.-

    Getting inspiration from something is great but it does seem to be a lot. There's fazes on the WH list. Brother's best friend etc. Lately it seems to be rejected mate stories but that's life really!
