I'm starting a story, and the main character is a boy. I feel like I don't talk like a boy when I type. And it's a teenaged boy around 16. Any tips? |

You could read lots of bookss through a boys perspective then get ideas. You could get a male cowriter |

@SoSpecialitsCrazy I've read a few with boy perspectives and I don't really like having cowriters. Any other suggestions? |

Well, he obviously wouldn't squee over stuff, like girls do, nor would he gossip. Boys are [normally] lazy, and in love with their video games. Girl problems, COULD CARE LESS y'know? They kind of live in the moment and don't show emotions very often. Well, any emotion that isn't sad... Wweh writing guys kind of comes naturally for me... At least, I hope it does... Try observing guys in your class, take notes and stuff. And also do what SoSpecialistCrazy said |

well from what I gathered: they do detail but not as detailed as girls are. Like, he prolly won't know or care that a red leather bag is a Michael Kors bag. To him it will be just a bag. What I do love about writing from a male's perspective (beside the fact that it is a challenge) is that they can be rude without being risqué, ya'no? Dependent. Problem solvers but personal problems are not met head-on. They're generally not over analytical altho they can get inside their heads (I've been, it is not pretty in there. :D). Ok, that's all I got. Hope that helps. |

@krysta3434 Stop trying to write like a boy and start writing like Derek/John/Chase ( or whatever your character is called). Think about how he would react in such or such situation, what he would say, what he would see. The fact he's a guy will influence this, but so will his background, his history, his personality. Not all guys are alike, and avoid sweeping generalisations to make your character as well rounded as possible. Some generalisations and cliché do have a basis in reality. Men tend to be more aggressive, and they don't talk as much as women, or in as much depth. They don't notice the same things as a woman would. A guy seeing a girl isn't going to notice what brand her clothes are, or if her makeup is well applied. However, you can subvert this. Some guys do talk a lot. Some of them are interested in fashion (even when they're not gay). Observe the men around you, see how they react and talk, in groups and on their own. Just consider Derek to be the same as any other character. He has qualities, he has faults, he is a product of his upbringing and surroundings. |

They don't think about emotions, they're aggressive, more hormonal than girls and they love video games |

How I write in a guys POV is the same a girls. just with less emotion and exaggeration. A guys brain can only think of one thing at a time, and there not very detailed thoughts. take your characters emotions and characteristics and out them in the context and there you have it :) hope that helped |

make your main character talk harsh, loves to play with girls doing uncensored explicit things... create a cool type personality.. |

Well this sounds difficult for you, but since I am a boy I don't find it that difficult. Well a lot of guys like video games in one way or another. Sports: college basketball and american football especially, is what we talk about. Occasionally we curse, some more than others. We aren't that complicated, listen to how the boys talk at school, its the best advice I can give. |

Also you should probably ask for boys to comment on this thread because some of the previous posts are to the extremes or totally incorrect... I'm looking at you @sociall_xperiment @xXsilentloverxX. We can think of more than one thing at a time, and not all of us are aggressive. The amount we talk is generally the same as girls, but yes deep down feelings are less shared, and our social skills often times equal that of a stereotypical cheerleader girl. P.S. we are not animals, only hormonal during random points, and temperament is variable. |

@krysta3434 It's easy. Write like yourself. You could go look up chemical differences of each gender in the brain and which traits either are more prone to have, but really, if you try too hard to type like a boy, it'll just end up gender-stereotypical and offensive. Some things are true about how guys think, but my advice is just write like you normally do, and according to the character. If you're trying to write like a boy, so you throw in stuff about video games and sports, yet your character doesn't like either, it wouldn't make sense. |

first you have to some up the characteristics of a average 16 yr old boy. but first see what kinda male character he is. is he aggressive, loving, caring, selfish and a bunch of other things. then that's when real guys can help you write like a boy when they understand your character. |
