@absentmindedme I personally loved The Tenant of Wildfell Hall... I've also read Agnes Grey, that Anne Bronte wrote, which I didn't like as much. But I think Anne deserves to be known along with her sisters! If you have a full collection, I'd also recommend reading Villette, by Charlotte Bronte. Not one of her best known books, but brilliant! |

@AemiJules What exactly is Agnes Grey about? |

@absentmindedme It's about this governess who works for various families, each more terrible than the next. In one household the children torture animals for fun and the adults encourage them. I don't quite remember how it ended, but Agnes Grey gets away from being a governess. I don't know, I didn't find it to be that gripping. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is better - it discusses subjects that no one else at the time dared to speak of. |

I think I'll go for the Bronte sisters since they wrote some of my all time fave but Austen is also good considering her Pride and Prejudice that made me awake for 2 whole days. >. |

Jane Austen is the best writer. Her books are herself. I love her books, because they show us how were people in that time and their traditions. A pat for that, her literature is really pure.. |

Jane Austen all the way!! her books not only reflect the time period and its social customs it also hints at the flaws of the social etiquette of the period, she likes giving her female protagonist a voice. Austen's novels are well rounded, there are hints of feminism, but its not so serious, it has humor an romance. Bronte Sister novels seem a bit intense to me, and humorless... |

I love Wuthering Heights, it's actually my favorite book. So for that I'm going to have to say the Bronte sisters. |

Both! But if I had to choose, I would say the Bronte sister because I prefer their darker side. |

ouch tough choice I would choose Jane Austen just because of Pride & Prejudiced .. Bronte sisters are pretty fascinating tho especially Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights -- anywho has anybody read Northanger Abbey?if so was it any good I have to read a book aside from class reading & I wanted to know if anyone truly enjoyed/hated it. Also is it any similiar to her other books? Thanks much appreciated if I get a response =) |

Bronte...there is just something about how they write dark images that intrigues me. |

Although Jane Austen ingrains an undisputable amount of charm in her novels with quirky and strong heroines who are opinionated in a time-period which restricted women’s voice in society and culture, I find her novels to lack the heart-stopping, nail-biting excitement and suspense that the Bronte sisters infuse in their own stories. They have dark and brooding male characters, troubled protagonists and locations that can inspire happiness or fear in the reader, they also never lack in romance. What could be better? The Bronte sisters, definitely. |

The Bronte Sisters. They're both favourite writers of mine, but I can't resist the gothic/darker sides of the Brontes. |

@Jessica370 I thought Northanger Abbey was Jane Austen's worst. She's mocking the gothic writers of the time, so it has a distinctly different feel than any of her other novels. If you want to read Austen and you haven't read Persuasion, I'd recommend that, it's wonderful! |

I definitely think Jane Austen. She made a way for women writers, and she's like the mother of romance novels! |

Jane Austen without a doubt. I've read Jane Eyre but did not find it as captivating as Pride and Prejudice |

Most definitely Jane Austen, there is a reason I make reference to her in my story (couldn't resist a mini-plug here). In all seriousness, Jane Austen should win based upon the fact she wrote Mr Darcy, the male character who has been the most common literary crush of women for the past 200 years. The Bronte sisters wrote amazing books with fascinating characters and stories, but they didn't reach the level of Jane Austen's Mr Darcy in my mind. |
