@Shikkui - The image choices are up to the hosts, though I would like it if they stuck to the basic rules I set up. I'll have to talk to them and see if they'd like to do some variation on the concept.

@dreamingthought Last round, I felt the pictures were too specific. Like some images had names for characters, which many authors used. I think it would be better if we just used general themes to set up the stage that authors must use. For example, something like: ROUND ONE: Suburban setting -- Elves. I think having a more general setting will differentiate the stories. Many of the stories in the last smackdown were too similar, and it was difficult to judge them all without growing tired of them.

@Shikkui If we do something that general, that kind of defeats the purpose of the contest, though. People could submit previously written work and say it was written for the contest.

Part of the challenge, the point is to use the images given and create something based on it. That's the smackdown way. We could just so a shakespeare round or something equally painful like they did for the sci fi one.

If people used the names of the images, that was their lack of creativity. I simply supplied images. The use of them was up to the author.

I think varying the rounds is a good idea. I liked that aspect of the Sci-Fi Smackdown. It was hell, but the challenge was good. A generalized theme to adhere to defeats the purpose of it being a round-specific challenge each time. I remember the Halloween one from last year involved assigned songs, and you had to make the story relevant to your song in some way. It was hard, but I got a great story out of it. RTS, for the win.

@dreamingthought Okay how about a round where we give each writer a different mythological demon from all different cultures?

That was more of an example: basically what about a round that requires each author to do a bit of research? If we include fantasy from other cultures, it will prevent writers from using pieces that they wrote before.

@dreamingthought I hated the song they assigned me, so I never listened to it. I just looked up the lyrics and went from there. (Hated the lyrics, too, but there you go. It's a challenge: it's not supposed to be a friggin' walk in the park.)

Also, eclectic. xD Just assign me random tribal jargon like I showed you last night, and we'll all be good.
