Just read on, lol. It's about the real Creuzfeldt Jakobs Disease, which turns the victims brain into a sponge like tissue and causes lots of hallucinations. Anyways, it's very ambigious, and the protagonist happens to be diagnosed...

In a modern day world, a cure for tuberculosis was never found.
