Is this a good idea?

I am starting a novel about this old guy's life in a future date but have the society be like it is today. The story is gonna have different recounts of the things he did with his life to better society and how he studied what used to be america to make teachings of how society never changes. It is loosely based off of the Fallout video game series (no I am not a geek that sits in my room all day) in that I 'borrowed' the idea of putting it in a future America setting where something catastrophic has happened. If you know anything of the video game, It is set after a nuclear war with China. I am not using a nuclear fallout, instead I am using a great economic collapse that sent the country into in fighting and division into many seperate parts. Does anyone think that this is good?

@RomanticThinkerJacob are alot of people going to die after this happens? In Fallout, you're kind of in a baren waste land are people are scarce (as far as I've played it thought which was only part2). It sounds like a really good idea to me, but the way the world's going now it seems like it might be overpopulated pretty soon. So that's why I'm just wondering where you might stand on that

@DarkConcertine no it won't be that bad. There are gonna b lot of people but I'm gonna go with it roughly off of a fallout like adventure

@RomanticThinkerJacob Sounds like it could be real interesting - it also sounds like you'd be doing flashbacks of how life was once was for this guy. The idea about "society never changes" is interesting - you could draw connections between the way people were in America (greedy, the "American dream", etc.) and how people are in the post-apocalyptic world. Are they after the same things? Probably...
