To the wise minds

@challenge647 Well in that case I may have to pack up a few of my stories, because I touch upon some underlying issues, but this was inspired by a combination of things honestly. First was the post in the SYS about african american stories then when I read it I voiced my opinion about needing to have characters that anyone can relate to, and also choosing the best characters for the story despite preference.

In certain cases I could be blamed for what would deem as whitewashing oi such a bad term that I hate recalling it. It was first brought to my attention when Hollywood attempted to adapt several Japanese media and casting Caucasian actors in those roles that were originally thought to be of Asian descent.

The biggest example of this has to be The Last Airbender fail. Most of the people against it were upset about the changes in names, but the main cluster hated the actors because they didn't fit the roles in their opinion. In that case I understood what they meant when comparing the series to the movie adaptation and hearing the interviews I would've assumed characters that weren't of Hollywood's stereotype, but nope.

Overall the purpose of this topic is to get people to think and open their minds to the possibility that sometimes find a balance to please multiple parties. But if your story is aimed solely for that niche then go for it. In my case with my own stories that would generally hit a niche I write such stories to enlighten others. Though I'm sure my words couldn't penetrate each head at least I try.

@clowen Wow lol that was a long speech you had going on there xD And in my last statement when I meant that the niche is bound to get some type of controversy when covering a diverse topic I really mean go for it. Every book has problems so who cares, make a book about a certain type of religion, or transexusuality, or whatever! Its yours, and as long as you love doing it than it can stay. But Hollywood and all that jazz isn't really about the things you love. Its more of a work and fame background...

@challenge647 Odd I've actually done both lol using middle eastern characters and created an entire mythology and bible there in one story while in another I touched upon the transexual topic. Goes to say that they're not exactly the most popular stories, but at least anyone who enters will at least have different selection of characters before their eyes than just the basic Jack and Jill. Yeah Hollywood is about the money if it doesn't sell then they won't produce wait yes they will they'll just make up some propaganda as to why their sales are so low when they forget they pushed out a big turd that no one wants to see even for free on netflicks lol.

@clowen And you have these stories on wattpad?? How many views have each of these gotten??

Oh p.s- I didn't really answer one of your earlier questions. "And if they do hit said niche market will this damage them in the long run when they attempt to branch out?" lol just to make sure you know which one I skipped XD But I dont think that it damages the book. It gives the book a sense of being actually like the book has its own personality. Its hard to explain...

@challenge647 Ah okay...well personality is what makes people be interested beyond just the first few pages I honestly think they'll enjoy it if they can get past the first few pages. And the one about the tranny issue eh around 350 some reads in total keeps getting on the what's hot list for non-teen fiction idk how, and the other one is sci-fi/fantasy what's hot list around 39 or 40 reads i think. Not too keen on reads since the feedback isn't as high, but oh well at least in a few months I'll get more when people start to notice :).

God, I'm tired, but I already said I was going to comment so...

I say write about whatever is best for the story. I've seen stories (books, movies, etc.) where it's obvious that the creator is thinking, "Oh look at me, I'm making a story about 9-11/Muslims/transexuals/what-have-yous. Isn't this SHOCKING and CONTROVENTIAL?" That's being an attention whore (or a troll if you're doing it intentionally to piss people off). That's just a dick move.

Anyway, if you honestly want to write about a minority or some class that isn't yours, go right ahead. It's your story. Writing about a niche group or a minority might turn people off but it also might bring a new set of readers. And if it's controvertial, at least it gets people thinking. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I like seeing different stories.

To tell you the truth, I'd rather read a story about different cultures and races going about their daily buisness than a story that is obviously whitewashing itself so it can "reach a broader audience" or so it doesn't offend anyone. Please. You are limiting your story's potential already. Also, anyone who gets offended at people who are different than them going about their lives should grow a pair and STFU.

Sorry if this is only semicoherent. It's late and I'm writing this from my mobile.

@LadyAstor Hello to the world of dick movers they love to take a nice turd on whatever topic they were originally using and shoving their own flawed views coarsely down everyone's throats, but I think it's a flawed mindset honestly.

And I totally agree with using different brands of characters I literally incorporated different brands of characters and unsuspectingly have other races as well, but in this world or at least this city the dominant race is middle eastern.

I wanted to do something that's based solely on characters of this persuasion because it's a rich culture that can be played wrong so I used them in a fantasy/sci-fi story so that in case I get something wrong I won't get hanged for it. But I do at least want to go outside of the generic standard of what characters in these kinds of stories should be.

It's totally fine with incoherentness of your words tonight because we all need something like that to find the truth outside of the whitewashing honestly. I know with me I like making diverse casts because it allows you to explore something unique and different within their own personal culture at times. And I enjoy doing that if the culture is key to understanding that character.

Maybe I'm weird, but anyone who knows me will know that I introduce a very well selected cast that sometimes may be hard to comprehend why they are even there but all of my characters have a purpose because I learned my lessons early on. Every character should show development whether big or small they should show some type of growth even if it's growth in reverse growth is still growth.

That's what makes people unique and different and that's why characters should be treated the same or else they LOSE the power that they should hold on the reader. Because without that power then we are all at a loss with allowing our worlds to exist without us, since they're children that must grow without their parents guidance at some point in their life.

@clowen wdf was that lol And @LadyAstor I think that when an author tries to do that is when he is desperate! Trying to write about a universal subject with transgender/religion/what-have-yous just to get fake tears out of he media is when you don't have any sense of morality or hope. Thats when media and authors combine to get down and dirty, thats when you aren't writing just for the love of it.

And you can actually find this on wattpad too! I myself am I muslim (I don;t wear a hijab or do most of the customs but I still am true to my religion and pray) and when I see that girls on the poetry side write about being muslim I think to myself oh yea I'm going to read this because I can relate but than when it gets put up for a day and gets A 1,000 VIEWS, I think to myself this might be a bunch of bullshit.

    Idk I could be jealous

@clowen And its okay to welcome readers into a world or place that they haven't been introduced into. But I think the question is (and I've said it before) when are you going to far??

Is this not the same as exploiting ones gender/conflict/religion/what-have-yous??

  • clowen

@challenge647 Hmm just insanity to it's fullest to get people to respond! Nah on the issue of selling out your soul for some money nope I wouldn't be jealous of it. I understand touching topics that may get attention whether good or bad, but don't do it for selfish reasons or else it'll be hollow in each sense. Maybe I'm just unique, but even if I do something I otherwise don't like more than likely I'll mesh my own approach in it so that I won't grow bored.

Hmm going too far I don't know...think in my eyes going too far is when you meld characters that otherwise don't belong in the world that you're presenting. And if someone tries to jump down my throat about the issues I've touched upon in my stories then I'll say it like this SCREW YOU each issue I use is integral to the plot! Again doesn't matter if it is important to the plot, but don't overdo the concepts that you can't in any form do properly. It's fine to experiment but to blatantly fail to the point where it offends others is too much.

@clowen true. And I think I kinda subliminally tried to cut your throat there ;) You left your flank open when you said that YOU use some of these what-have-you topics! I started to think that you were a writer who just wrote because you wanted people to make fake tears or so someone can start an argument w.e. But I can't argue with what you've stated now.

P.s- lol its only been a week :) Im sure everyone will start coming back SOMEDAY O.o or well just have to recruit somehow...

@challenge647 Yeah cutting my throat won't work since I have a thick hide. When it comes to writing I write solely because I crave to do such a story and the rest then deal with it. Most people go silent on me when I go all wise, but rest assured there are others out there that may love to try and put me in my place. Yet I honestly doubt they can since I can always find an opening.

Besides that I'm either the person with the masterplan, a blogger, or some goofy girl ughhhh >.> I HATE the poetry section! There popularity is worst -___- more robotic actually. Theres this guy named JacckDaniels and he has about everyone of his poems on the whats hot list. I read one of his poems...hes alright. BUT IM BETTR >.< WHY CANT ANYONE READ MY POEMS RICH KID ROBOTIC DOUCHE BAGS DX ughh I hate wattpad but at the same time love it:/ it reminds me why I love the forums so much...no one is popular. (cept the moderators cuz they have to be lol) :( Such a society wattypaddy has become, and no one knows it! Or either everyone does but they dont care...

@challenge647 Yeah I calmly avoided that heated topic with all my might. Eh wisdom comes with age is what I hear, but I've always been like this most of my life though I've always got knocked around for my smart words. Yikes hmm though I don't belong to one section in any sense I'm a sci-fi writer but I have always been uncomfortable with just one approach so I write multiple genres. I still have topics and genres I would never touch, yet outside of that I'm basically open to inspiration.

Hmm with a name like that it's obvious why lol. With what people classify as a tour de force then obviously some are wearing rose colored glasses. It's improbable to understand what classifies as quality nowadays since most of the critics detest certain styles, genres, etc. and tend to forget that the work shouldn't be judged by such a narrow brush. If the words can't be interpreted then it has failed, but if it hits a niche and actually is a decent watch then why not give it the grade it deserves.

Eh...the audience on wattpad has a short attention span, and I know such words should be avoided by someone like me for fear my numbers will drop but I don't care. The counter will either stop or increase whether I speak or not. And the mods are an interesting bunch that scare me senseless. Sigh I'd go with no one cares instead, because we're slowly regressing to shells of our former selves upon this trek.

@clowen I was just reading over page 1 of this discussion...we were so moved. SO strong together as wattypaddyians! And now we're fading. and the last thing you said...woah. but your right, consistency and patience is what wattpaddy needs. People just don't get it and they try to go the easy way out! In this website blahxblah isnt a so called sin or rule. Its normal, I on the other hand think that its ambition that drives us to doing that. AND I KNOW!! When its time to decipher something that you don't understand I'm ready, I like a good play, something to test me. But instead these people shy away from it. On my poem I had to add a "deciphering" page and had to pick out EVERYSINGLE LITTLE WORD! I thought that the mystery of not knowing was supposed to be fun, long yes, but interesting. Wattypaddyians only interest in the shiny things that make their teenage brains ejaculate with glitter and rainbowballs -__-

@chiralphenomena thought I should add you into the conversation because..well idk really :P its something about the way you commented back with such intellect. Welcome :) and read the first page if your not sure what were about

@challenge647 We were coming off the V4V discussion, but this thread has never been geared towards one topic or else it would've died LONG AGO! >.> I keep reminding people that I named this thread very brilliantly to avoid the stagnant times that were bound to be ahead of us. This is it and the name still seems better than V4V discussion because if that was the sole gist then trolling brigade I'm around would've flooded and destroyed this thread so long ago.

To the blahxblah it's that way with most stories that are considered trendy in some sense everyone wants a partner, but should a story be solely about love or should it have more? In my opinion it's fine to have love or at least a budding relationship as the backbone or even a random bone in this body, but don't allow it make the muscles or else the story won't function.

I think this is why everyone can't tolerate how ingenious I am with ideas, stories, and etc. because I ALWAYS over think my creations. I admit it is a flaw, but at least it's not mindless ramblings since the words poured make sense most of the time. I am known for randomness as well, but mainly I'm very creative and can craft a formidable concept. But all they crave is LOVE, SHINY, and HOT MALES that they would prefer were homosexual.
