Chapter Thirty

Megan is on the side!

Emily's POV

The following morning we wake up around six in the morning. It has become routine to wake up so early. I go to take a quick shower in the bathroom connected to my bedroom. I feel a pang in my chest as I take in how everything has stayed the same. My makeup is all packed carefully in a wooden woven basket. There is a light up mirror in the center of the two sinks, with perfume and lotion surrounding it. A blue brush is set above the first drawer that contains my old toothbrush and toothpaste.

Tears roll down my cheeks as the simple familiarity brings back memories of my parents.

"What would you like for breakfast, Lee?" My dad asks as I stumble down the stairs, trying to reign in my absurd hair. I sleep like a possessed child at night, resulting in a tangled mess of hair. I yawn and tug down on my tank top that had been ridden up in the middle of the night.

"Waffles." I mutter, seeing Brady sitting at the kitchen table. He gives me a goofy smile as I take a seat next to my cousin. He then puts his hand to his ear, representing him talking on the phone.

"Ring ring. 'Hello? Yes I'll tell her.'" Brady drops his hand, pretending to hang up his imaginary phone before he looks at me. "It's the bride of Einstein. She wants her hair back." Brady says to me. I stick my tongue out at him.

"Nice." I grumble. I hear the familiar chuckle of my dad and I peek up at him, smiling softly. My father had an infection laughter.

My mom enters the kitchen a moment later with a fully dressed and well made up Megan. Megan has a smile on her face, prancing in with her arms swinging back and forth. "You look like death." She states, plopping down beside me.

"Gee, everyone is full of compliments today." I roll my eyes.

"Maybe if you tamed your hair and wiped the makeup off from under your eyes, we wouldn't think you just rose from the grave." My mom says. My eyes widen and I get to my feet.

"Oh my god. Okay!" I go to head back upstairs to change until my father announces,

"Breakfast is ready!"

I look in the mirror, brushing the heel of my hand against my cheek to wipe away the tears. That memory took place the day before everything changed. We were all so happy. The pack was so peaceful, everyone got along and there wasn't a fear in the world.

I would give anything to turn back the clock and save my family from their death. However, I can't help but think that if the attack didn't happen, I wouldn't have met Samuel. No matter what, losing Samuel would be more painful than all the deaths of my family combined.

After taking a refreshing shower, I throw my wet hair into a bun on the top of my head and dress in my old favorite outfit. It consisted of dark blue skinny jeans with a dusty red blouse underneath and a black blazer on top. I then pulled on black knee high boots and finished off with hoop earrings.

I met Samuel down in the kitchen, freezing when I see him standing behind the counter where my father would always wait for us to make breakfast. Samuel meets my eyes and smiles. "Morning, Lee!" Brady calls, sitting in his usual seat at the kitchen table. "You look.... Beautiful?" He seemed confused, cocking his head to the side.

I blush, looking at Samuel who gives me a crooked smile, leaning against the counter on his elbows. "I don't look like the bride of Einstein?" I question, looking back at Brady. His goofy smile drops as the memory flows through his mind. Then he bits the inside of his cheek and shakes his head.

"No. No you don't." The softness and the sincerity of his voice made my throat close as my eyes watered. I feel arms wrap around my shoulders and I see Megan smile.

"That was a good morning." Megan says, sitting in her spot at the table. "Emily used to come down in the morning with a tumble weed of hair, running make up and backwards shirts. She was a mess and we would make fun of her." Megan explains to Samuel. I bow my head, completely embarrassed. Why would she tell him that?

I then projected the memory to Samuel and I look at him as his eyes move out of focus as he watches that morning play out. A small smile plays on his lips. "You were sexy." He growls out. I feel my eyes widen and look at Brady and Megan to see them burst out laughing.

"That's a first." Megan giggles, shaking her head.

I walk over to Samuel and he drapes an arm around my shoulder, pulling me into his side. "You had a lovely family." He whispers, placing a kiss to my forehead.

"So, do you have any little ones or are you waiting for the big day?" Megan asks, wiggling her eyebrows. I turn my head to look at my innocent sister, her eyes wide with enthusiasm. She must have heard Samuel propose last night.

"No. No children." I say. Samuel rubs his hand up and down my arm, giving me a comforting squeeze. "We lost all of them."

Megan is silent and she looks over at Brady, raising her eyebrows. He opens his mouth and shakes his head. I wonder what they were saying. "What can we do to help?" I squint at him. How did he know he could help? I look at Samuel who presses a kiss to the top of my head and walks over to sit across from Brady and Megan.

"Actually, do you think Matthew would be willing to help?" He asks Megan. What does he have in mind? "Emily and I are going to search for answers. We don't know how long it will be so we will be bringing our beta with us. I would leave the pack to him, but he will be needed."

Samuel was wanting to go looking so soon? What about getting married? Did he not want to do that first? "Okay... So you want us to check in every now and then or...?" Megan was just as confused as I was.

"No. I was wondering if Matthew would take the position of temporary Alpha of the Colorado Pack."
