Chapter 1

Ron

It's nothing like other years, going back. Practically everyone who hasn't already been taken out of school has gone home with their parents, and I reckon there are only about thirty of us getting on the train. Mum and Dad had an emergency Order meeting; otherwise Ginny and I probably would've had to go with them. At least we won't have any trouble getting a compartment to ourselves.

We grab the first empty one we see. Harry sits down and I go to sit across from him, but Hermione stops me.

"In a minute," she says absently. She's still walking.

"What are you looking for?" I ask, following.

Hermione stops so suddenly that I nearly crash into her. I look over her shoulder into the next compartment. Ginny's in there with a group of her girlfriends.

"Never mind," says Hermione, turning abruptly. "Let's go back."

"Wait a minute," I say. "What's Ginny doing in there? Why isn't she with Harry?"

Hermione looks up at me, her face worried. "I think they broke up," she says unhappily.

"When?" I say blankly. They were together this morning, and at the funeral, and then Harry was with us the whole time. They didn't have time t...
