Chapter One:
It's About Time

Darkheart Manor, family home to all members of the Darkheart Clan, was at its peak of beauty. The path to the house was lined with flowers of white and pale blue, and the entire house was decorated with them as well. Even the large fountain in front of the house -- a massive dragon that breathed water instead of fire -- was adorned with the flowers.

It was quite an occasion indeed. Guests arrived at the front gate to be carried in horse-drawn carriages up to the house, then they were ushered to the gardens in the back by a house elf named Dasher. For the ancient house, today was a special occasion. One of its likeness had not been held there in fourty-three years, since Lord Mordicus Darkheart married Lady Kacia Deosil.

"Back here, please you!" Dasher squeaked as he pointed out the path around the house to a few guests. "The garden is being back here!"

Nick Cardinal, a friend and colleague of the late Mordicus Darkheart, walked over to the house elf with a smile across his face. "Dasher...would you tell me where the groom is, please?"

"Master Alex is around back with Miss," Dasher said. "They is still not getting into the house."

"Hmm," Nick pondered. "I'll have to get someone to take a look at the place."

"Lady sealed it before she left," Dasher told him. "She made it so the only person who could open it is her or the rightful owner."

Nick frowned. "Thank you, Dasher."

"Yes, sir!" The house elf darted off to call a few other people onto the path, leaving Nick with his thoughts.

"Hey, asshole!"

Nick raised his head and smiled. "Alex... how are you?" Nick called as he walked towards his friend.

"Nervous as hell," Alex muttered. "Cserri's still not doing that well, but she insisted on going through with this."

"Good," Nick nodded.

A week earlier, The Daily Prophet ran an article that announced the Minstry of Magic's decision to declare Auror Phoenix Darkheart dead after she'd been abducted by Death Eaters and went missing for over a year. Even for an accomplished Auror such as Darkheart, the Ministry had lost hope of recovering her alive. Nick, an Expert in Magical Law and pending member of the Wizengamot, was the only person who knew where to find Phoenix's will, a document she'd hidden for reasons no one but she would know. But so far, he hadn't been able to go and get it. He, like most other people that knew her, didn't want to believe she was gone.

"So, when will you be getting it, then?" Alex asked, watching Nick. "The will, I mean..."

Nick sighed, leaning against a tree in the garden. "Soon," he said. "A few days, probably."

"It's driving Cserri crazy, you know," Alex said. "Not being able to get into her own house."

"Technically she's not the rightful owner," Nick sighed. "We'll work something out... I'm sure the owner doesn't want it."

"What makes you say that?"

Nick shook his head, waving a dismissive hand. "It's a long, depressing story. And you're getting married today... which I've been waiting for for far too long."

Alex laughed and shook his dirty blonde hair back out of his eyes. "Yeah... you and the rest of the wizarding world." He pulled a rolled-up magazine from his pocket. "Have you seen the Prophet today?"

Nick raised a brow. "No, I was too busy getting the girls ready to come here. Why?"
