Chapter Seventeen

Dad. My dad is still alive, living, breathing but more importantly not dead. He was still alive, he didn't die in the crash.

"D-Dad?" I said, the word felt weird against my lips.

He smiled gently and put a fatherly arm on my shoulder. "Yes, Sara?"

I said nothing. It still felt wrong, I saw him lying inside the coffin. I remember how I was pulled out of school in the middle of class; how the teachers explained that my parents got into a car crash and were announced as D.O.A or dead on arrival.

"Sara," he said, sounding far more different from the way he talked to the other three people who took me here. "What on Earth are you wearing and what are those hideous things on your wrists?" He took hold of my hands and examined it. He had a disgusted look on his face as he turned to face the three people.

"Who the hell put these-" he gestured to the chains on my wrists "-on her."

The girl looked down; she looked flustered around my dad. The most caring, kindest, gentlest guy I know. He was always such a great person to me and mom and everyone else he talked to but now when he spoke he sounded cold and heartless.

"River, I did tell you not to harm her, did I not?"

"Yes you did sir," the girl shrank back so did the men behind her "My deepest apologies sir," Cleopas and Festus mutter their own apologies. When dad turned back to me, when he wasn't facing them

"Are you okay Sara?"

I nodded; no words seem to form on my mouth.

"Give me the God damn key to unlock this," he said impatiently.

River freed my hands.  I rub my sore wrists; I had new bruises and scratches now.

"Sara be honest with me what did those sick bastards do to you?" was it just me or did I hear a double meaning to his words?

"Well they kind of kidnapped me..." kind of? Right.

"WHAT?"

I shifted uncomfortably, I hadn't actually needed to tell anyone about the little incident during the hiking trip. But now I was going to tell it to my father and three other strangers. Which of whom are immortals: I hope I just don't sound crazy as I think I'm going to sound.

And besides what was I going to say: "Well you see dad... me and my friends were going on a hike when I got lost in the forest and I somehow ended up finding an injured wolf in the middle of nowhere but get this it wasn't actually a wolf it was a werewolf. And it turned back to his human form. So he gets all weird when he finds out that I saw him turn and so he kidnapped me returning me to his mansion. Well and that is actually owned by my classmate who is an undercover - sort of - human in my school. Oh in a few months they said that they have to make into one of them so I won't be killed by your Council."

Nah, instead I tell them a shorter summary of that and left out the less important things.

After having all of that a thought that had been bothering me earlier popped out from my mouth so suddenly that I had barely any time to think it through: "Where's mom?"

Dad didn't even seem remotely concern, "She's gone,"

"Wait, what? But hadn't you...." I make stupid arm gestures to help.

"No," he said flatly, "She's gone Sara,"

"What do you mean?" I said sounding like a child that had just been told that Santa Claus doesn't exist and is now feeling betrayed.

"She died, your mother, hadn't survived. I did." He said.

"And you didn't save her?" I asked.

"She was already dead and I had to save myself."

"WHY DIDN'T YOU SAVE HER?" I shrieked. "SHE WAS YOUR WIFE."

"Sara, calm down."

"But you let her die," I whispered to myself.

"It was either me or her,"

"You let her die,"

"Sara please be reasonable,"

"But you technically killed her!"

"Sara," Dad looked tired.

"I'd rather be back with the boys,"

"Fine, if that's how you feel," he said coldly. To the three he said, "Take her back to her prison cell. She needs time to cool down and keep watch on her River."

"What? You can't do that!" I burst out moving away from the arms that tried to grab mine.

"I can and I will." he said. "You may be my only daughter but I can always have another."

Festus and Cleopas took either sides of my arm and tugged me away.

"Send her some clothes and food while you're at it,"

"Wait," the voice came out of darkness.

"I was not talking to you, Markus,"

"I think you better consider what I have to say," he said smoothly.

"And what is it?"

He smiled. "Your daughter is an oracle,"

"ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" Festus spoke up from the back.

"Yes, our little Blondie is a maiden who can see visions,"
