Chapter Twelve

Damon’s POV

I headed out of the Grill, taking the long way back to the house. I decided to cut through the park, say hello to the un-murdered squirrels and what have you. I almost passed by the bench, but something stopped me. I turned to face the person sat there, and sat down next to them.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, staring at the trees in front of me rather than at the face beside me.

“I could ask you the same question.” Was the reply. I laughed.

“I’m not fourteen years old, Jess,” I pointed out. She smiled, and then frowned slightly.

“Just how old are you?” She enquired, smirking. I shook my head.

“Small details, Gilbert. Why are you out here?” She thought for a moment, then sighed.

“I just needed space to breathe,” She muttered. I raised an eyebrow.

“No oxygen in your house?” She glanced at me sideways.

“Your turn; why are you here?” She retaliated.

“Should’ve seen that coming, shouldn’t I? You want the real reason? You,” I admitted.

Jess’s POV

“Me?” I repeated. “What about me?” Damon looked at me for a moment, staring me directly in the eyes. I shivered in anticipation; well that, and it was cold out.

“I’m sorry, Jess. I lied to you.” He looked serious. My lips made the shapes of the words I was trying to say, but it was a moment before any sound came out.

“What-what do- you lied? How?” I stammered, feeling like an idiot. I tried replaying everything he’d said to me in my mind, but nothing jumped out.

“Do you remember last night? Everything that was said then?” He questioned, sliding an inch closer to me. I narrowed my eyes at the ground and tried to recall every sentence we’d exchanged. Damon put two fingers under my chin and tilted my head so that his eyes and mine met. He glanced briefly over his shoulder, leaned in and touched his lips to mine. I closed my eyes and didn’t resist for a moment, letting him kiss me. Then, shaking like a leaf, I pulled my face away and looked at him.

“Damon, I can’t. We can’t. I’m fourteen, Damon. We could never-” He cut me off by putting a finger on my lips.

“Jess, we can make it work.” I heard the words, watched his lips move, saw the need in his eyes. I bit my lip and closed my eyes with a desperate sigh.

“Damon, I-”

“Just tell me you don’t feel the same way. Just tell me that,” He said, looking at me so intently it felt like he was burning a hole in my head. I pushed a hand against my forehead and exhaled. Then, I leant towards him and kissed him back.
