Death.  It is the story of my life.  Death has encased my heart, broken my soul.  Death is what makes me who I am, an orphan.  Death is what scares me the most; my greatest fear.  It is also what is etched into my DNA; it is what built me.  It is the result of my actions.  It has spread like a disease to all the ones I love, because of me.  It looms in my past and haunts my future.  It attacks my dreams, reminding me of my crimes every time I close my eyes.  Worst of all, I do not know how to stop.

All the death in my life flashes before my eyes.  My family, my friends, all of the innocent people.  I see their blood on my hands.   I see the wreckage of my actions laid out in front of me, in pieces.  The air swirled with smoke, causing my vision to blur.  It didn’t matter anyways, all I could see was the blood.  Blood from my family, which I took from them.  I could see the life drain from their bodies, fear forever inscribed in their eyes.  The fear…it was almost like a high for me.  It was absolutely intoxicating.  It warmed my soul to feel the fear of others as I took their life away.  I was a monster, a demon in the flesh.  I could feel their flesh rip away from the bone as I sank my teeth into their necks.  The blood splattered all over the seats, proving as evidence of what I was doing.  As I dropped the lifeless body from my hands, I could feel warm, liquid slide down my arm, staining my white blouse.  I slowly licked the dripping blood from my arm; the blood of my mother.  As I looked around the wreckage, I heard a soft whimpering.  I turned towards the source of the noise to find a small child stare at me with wide eyes.  I sinister smile found its way to my lips as I stalked toward the child.  As I closed the gap between the two of us, the child yelled my name over and over again. “Christabell!  Christabell!  Christabell!”

I woke with sweat pouring down my face.  I panted trying to catch my breath.  It was so real.  I was reliving my parents death, but with me as the killer.  ‘It was just a dream.  It was just a dream.’  I told myself over and over again.  I knew it was just a nightmare, but it seemed so real.  I could feel the blood, smell the smoke, taste their fear.

I took a deep breath, trying to clear the nightmare from my head.  I took another deep breath and rolled over toward my night stand.  The neon green numbers of the clock announced that it was 5:13.  I rolled back over with a groan, attempting to go back to sleep.  I stared at the ceiling, knowing that it was not going to happen.  With a sigh, I kicked the thick covers off me, and groggily climbed out of bed.

When my bare feet touched the cold wood floor, a shiver ran up my spine.  I rapped my arms around myself as I headed toward the bathroom.  I turned the knobs of the shower, setting the water to its highest temperature.  I peeled off my sweat soaked clothes and threw them to the cool tile floor.  I stepped into the shower, letting the water burn my skin.  Even under the scolding water my nightmare still sent shivers through my body.

Giving up on the whole shower idea I turned it off and dried off.  I wandered back to my room and fell back onto my bed.  I glanced around my room, my eyes landing on my jogging shoes.  I went to my closet, grabbed my clothes, laced up my shoes, and was out the door.

The sun was starting to come up over the horizon, lighting the sky with swirls of orange and pink.  I admired the sky as jogged down the side walk; music blasting in my ears.  Ear step I took was in sync with the beat of the music.  Eventually I got lost in the music, losing sense of time.  Finally I stopped to catch my breath.  I looked to the sky to see that the sun was fully up, showing that a great deal of time had passed.  Turning back the way I came, I could feel someone watching me.  The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, as I felt eyes on me.  I whirled around, expecting to see someone.  Instead, I only found air.  I shook my shoulders, trying to brush off the feeling that someone was watching me.  After a minute I shoved the headphones back into my ears and took off toward my house.

The whole way home I could feel someone watching me, but every time I went to confront the person, there was no one there.  ‘I seriously need to get a psych evaluation again.’ I thought to myself.

I glided up the steps of my porch to the door.  I dug through my pockets searching for my keys, but I could not find them.

“Where are you hiding?”  I said aloud.  I patted down my pockets with no avail.  I turned around to search my sidewalk when I saw a flash of black escape from my view.  Startled, I jumped back, causing me to lose my balance.  I let out a scream as I fell back against the door, smashing my head against the frame.  My vision skewed as my brain slammed against the back of my skull.  I sat rooted in my spot, due to the pain and fear coursing through my veins.  My hands flew to the back of my head, covering the welt that was now on my head.  Even after the pain dwindled, I still sat completely still.  I was paralyzed with fear.

My eyes scanned over the yard, looking for the black figure.  I yelped when the black flash ran up at me.  I covered my eyes, afraid of what was about to happen.  I waited and waited for someone to attack me, but instead I felt something rub up against my thigh.  Slowly peeking through my hands my eyes landed upon a cat.  I sighed as realized that it was the cat the whole time.

With a grunt I lifted myself from the ground, causing me head to throb from the sudden movement.  I groaned as I bent down to pick up the spare key from under the doormat.

I shoved the key into the oak door, opening it.  Once it was open I slid the spare back under the mat and locked the door.  I walked into the kitchen grabbing a bag of ice from the freezer.  Pressing the cold bag against my head, I glanced out the bay window that consumed my kitchen.  I watched as the sky was eaten by the dark, gloomy rain clouds as they spread over the sun.  I continued to stare out the window, still feeling as if I was being watched.  My gaze shifted toward the forest that surrounded my house.  I looked off into the darkness of the forest only to meet a pair of emerald green eyes.  As our eyes connected fear shot through my body like a bullet. I dropped the ice as the eyes disappeared from my view.  I stood there, paralyzed by the fear.  As I started to properly function again, I snapped the blinds shut, thinking to myself, ‘guess I don’t need the psych evaluation after all.’
