Chapter 10:
When I woke up the second time light streamed through the window above the hospital bed. I squinted against the soft light, wishing I had enough energy to get up and close the blinds. My eyes finally focused on the dark room. My eyes caught a dark shape sitting in the corner of the room, heart racing I continued to stare at the shape, trying to make out who it was.
The shadow stood up and revealed itself in the light. I sighed of relief when I saw it was Zane. Like earlier he knelt down next to the bed, examining my arm before meeting my eyes.
"Hey." I said, happy my voice didn't betray me this time.
Zane smiled at me. "Hey." He didn't say anything else. With anybody I would have felt awkward staring at them with nothing else to say. But with Zane it felt... right.
We continued to stare at eachother like that for quite some time. He finally broke our gaze. Glancing back down at my arm. "How are you feeling?"
Honestly my arm was burning, I was exausted, sick and had a headache. But looking at his face I couldent find the courage to say that. So I went with a simple lie. "Fine." I shrugged.
"Good, you don't know how worried I was."
My heart skipped a beat. Zane was worried for me. Me out of all people. "Why?"
He glanced up at me with sorrow in his eyes. "You remind me of my little sister, she died by Vampires when she was twelve."
I cleared my throat. "How are we similar?" Because honestly? I didn't like being comapred to a twelve year old. Zane's sister or not.
He shrugged. "Your personality, looks, and determination." He looked down at his hands lost in thought.
I licked my lips. "Determination?" I didn't know I had any.
He nodded. "In your eyes, you both share the expression. Like you can take on the world." He gave a small laugh, as he looked back up at me. His smile didn't reach his eyes.
I felt bad for him, he had lost his parents, younger sister, home, and had to fend for himself at a very young age. It was a wonder how he could be so in control and calm all the time. If I were him I'd've gone insane. But that's just me.
I shrugged lightly. "Yeah I guess so, I mean I don't feel that way."
He looked back up at me, sorrow still masking his features. "You will one day, and it will change your life."
He seemed to know a lot about my future. "How?"
"Because with that characteristic you will become untouchable when a Vampire is near. With my training and your own nature you will take down a Vampire better than I did the other night."
This suprised me. "I don't know Zane, you were pretty bad ass that night."
That earned me a full smile. That smile faltered when he conisdered something. "Zane? No one calls me that." He didnt sound mad, but that didn't stop me from feeling guilty about my lack of titles.
"I... uh... sorry." I said face turning red.
He placed a hand on mine, making my heart race once again. "Don't be, it doesent sound bad coming from you."
I looked from our hands to his eyes. "What do you mean?"
He smiled. "I mean that its perfectly okay to call me Zane."
I was shocked. "Really?" He seemed so laid back, that's what I loved about him.
He nodded. "I like it when you say my name."
He took his other hand and placed it on my cheek. Something flashed across his face, something that went away all to quickly. But I saw it. Affection.
Did Zane like me as much as I liked him? More than friends? I couldent tell because just as he had yesterday he got up and left me without a single word.
I sighed and stared at the ceiling. If Zane and I had feelings for eachother we were going to be in a lot of trouble.
