Chapter 30

“I promise you I am fine!” exasperates Sam for the 10th time that morning as she’s buttoning up her uniform.
“The physician also said not to overdo it,” retorts Adrian causing Sam to roll her eyes.

For the first few days bed-rest had been amazing; she’d caught up on her favourite crime dramas, she’d managed to read a few books and even watch a few films. But then…it got far too dull and boring. The worst thing had been the physiotherapy for her leg-no actually, the psychiatry sessions had been worse but they didn’t last too long. The physio though, that had been hell. But boredom had got so bad that she actually started looking forward to them.
Thankfully, work has now allowed her back after being cleared by the physiotherapist. She still has to go to the odd session but the stiffness and pain in her leg has definitely reduced considerably.
Only try telling that to Adrian. His concern although, incredibly sweet has been overwhelming to Sam. Rather than put her at ease with each passing day, it’s grinded on her nerves.
But anyone would be when they’re driven to the grocery store they would normally just walk to. And it’s not just that. Apart from chauffeuring her around, he’s also been restraining himself-sexually that is.
Abstinence is now her mortal enemy and sexual frustration her only friend.
Still at least she can go to work now.

“Hey Sammie, good to have you back girl! It has been too quiet around here without you!” cries Hanna with a hard hug. Sam returns it just as strongly, getting a waft of Hanna’s designer perfume that’s so familiar.
“Well, I never thought I’d see the day, I’d be looking forward to doing paperwork,” grins Sam.
“Shut up! I cannot believe you’re even in. If I had an accident and a hunky boyfriend like yours I would be milking it for all it’s worth,” winks back Hanna to which Sam can only internally snort to.
She mutters back, “it’s not all it’s been cracked up to be.”

A few hours of being in the hectic environment, she’s glad. The amount that’s just piled up from the simplest cases has Sam a little overwhelmed but she ploughs through.
That is until there’s commotion outside her office.  Curious as to whom the new restless arrestee may be, she rushes out.

She stops dead in her tracks. It’s no hooligan that’s in handcuffs or a whale of a thug but rather her white-collar boyfriend. Her immediate reaction is confusion and then outrage. There is no way a guy like Adrian Carter-a stickler for rules-could be arrested. A speeding ticket perhaps is the most she expects him to be booked with but anything more than that? Anything that can get him arrested-no way. There has to be some sort of mistake. Dumbfounded she wastes minutes stood like a statue just staring before action kicks in.
Furious she marches up to Officer Hoult as he’s placing Adrian into the empty cell.

“What the fuck, Brian? Why the hell has he been arrested?” she spits trying to go around the middle aged man to get to Adrian. But Brian just keeps her path blocked and holds up his hands defensively.
“Sorry Torres but you got a problem with it-take it up with Chief,” retorts Brian.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Hoult. Just tell me what the problem is.”
“No can do, Deputy-it’s confidential. Even you’ll have to talk to the Chief,” shrugs Brian.
Sam shoots him a look so deadly that were it possible, Brian would be going through the wickedest torture in hell. She has no idea why Brian is spewing this bullshit. As Deputy she has a goddamn right to know why someone has been arrested, especially when that someone is her boyfriend and one of the main contributors to their pensions. She briefly considers taking Brian down but gazing around at the audience they have, she knows it would not set a good example.

Chief glances up, not too surprised oddly enough. Too preoccupied, Sam doesn’t notice and instead glares at him with frustration.
“What?” states the Chief paying no attention to his clearly exasperated second in command.
“Brian Hoult has just arrested Adrian Carter and apparently I have to take it up with you, if I want to even know why!” spits Sam with indignantly.
“Oh yes that…” muses the Chief and this lack of concern doesn’t go amiss with Sam. She’s curious, sure as to what’s going on, but a large part of her is also envious of not being included in this plan or whatever it is. Did they think that she’d tell Adrian? Has he really done something bad or is this about something else? Still whatever it’s about Chief could have had her to fetch Adrian-not Brian.
“’Yes that’ what? Chief what is going on? Is Ade in trouble? Why has Brian arrested him?” questions Sam, the frustration seeping into worry.
“Don’t worry, just send Brian in and you go talk to Adrian. Make sure he’s okay,” instructs the Chief. Only too happy to comply in showing up Brian and getting a chance to talk to Ade, she nods at the instruction.

“Chief wants to see you in his office, Brian. Oh and you can remove the handcuffs off him,” smugly states Sam towards Brian.
Brian just shrugs, surprisingly not bothering to argue with Sam’s word and removing the handcuffs.
Then as Brian steps back, Sam takes a cautious step towards Adrian, stern concern in her expression.
“You okay? What happened?” she quietly asks however when Ade exhales deeply and shakes his head, Sam’s left in confusion.

“You, Sam. You happened. You crashed into my life, tipping it into chaos. You’re impulsive, you’re stubborn and you challenge me in so many ways. And that’s why you shouldn’t be my girlfriend…”
