Staring out the window I can see the edge of the horizon shrinking. This thin line of light seems to grow within me the anxiety of the night to come. I miss the sun, its red-orange security blanket that seems to fail me at dusk. It never stays. That would be my only wish.
They don’t come upstairs at all. They dwell in the deep bowels of the large hive buildings that pepper the landscapes with their massive stone and glass. Most of the hives were underground. Deep within the flesh of the earth, they burrowed their self-contained cities. It was so deep that the light of day could never hope to touch them. I press my face against the window, hoping to get just that much closer to the horizon and let the sun burn brightly just a while longer. Yet it does not wait, the silver caress of its light fails me again and sinks over the edge of the earth, promising to return at dawn.
The nights are not so quiet. The blackness of the world outside seems to cause the windows to turn into solid slabs of dark ink stone, impenetrable with no escape to be seen. It’s not that I want to escape, how would I know any different than this? I was born, raised and now awaiting my own binding ceremony to whichever vampire chooses me as their servant. I would then be theirs, to serve, honor and obey until I died. Immortal, as they come, they just replace us like a worn out shoe, a blink in their lifetimes.
The world has nothing to offer anymore outside the skyscrapers of the hive buildings. It’s just that I hope that one day it will. Something tells me it will. Something tells me that I am not the only one here that knows there is more to this world than hives of stone filled with vampires and human servants. Something or someone is out there, and I will be the one to find them.
