The park in 15?

I squinted against the light shining off the screen of my phone as I walked to the park. Stuffing it inside my pocket, I let out a yawn. It was almost four on a Saturday afternoon, but for some reason I was sleepy. Colby sent me that text message while I was in bed about five minutes ago, and even though I wanted to take a nap, I knew that I shouldn’t. Taking a nap at 4pm was not really ideal, and I wanted to see Colby, anyway.

Turning right around the corner, I saw the park’s entrance and slowly approached it. After all, I was early. As I neared though, I saw a familiar figure leaning against a tree, and even at a distance, the dark hair and the stance was unmistakable. A smile worked its way up my lips. Looked like I wasn’t the only excited one.

Colby’s head was bent down, and I was close enough to see that his fingers were fiddling with his phone. He still hadn’t noticed that I was standing a couple of feet away from him. I took the opportunity to ogle my best friend. He was wearing a maroon jacket over a pinkish-reddish shirt, and blue jeans. His hair was in its usual state, the one which made him look handsome (which was always), and a slight frown etched his features as he pressed at his phone keys. He looked really good, and I felt a blush graced my cheeks.

He was so engrossed at whatever he was doing though, and I guess he didn’t feel my stare, which was good. I had to clear my throat for him to notice me. Colby’s head jerked up, then immediately returned back to his phone. His eyes widened and he pressed a couple more buttons furiously, before letting out a groan. I just stood there, watching in amusement.

“You made me die!” He exclaimed, thrusting his phone at me. Blinking, I stared at his screen. A big game over was staring back at me, and a picture of a car bursting in flames was in the background. I couldn’t help it. I burst out laughing as he frowned.

“I-I’m sorry,” I blurted out, still giggling.

“No you’re not,” he muttered, slipping his phone inside his jacket pocket. He sighed. “That was level 15 already, damn.”

That made me roll my eyes, though I was smiling. “You can always play it again.”

He shot me a look, his brows furrowed. “That was level fifteen.”

“And I am the Queen of England,” I muttered underneath my breath. Colby didn’t seem to hear me since he continued mumbling condolences to his level fifteen game, whatever it was.

I clicked my tongue, and bit my lip as I looked at Colby. He was calming down, and that he should. It was just a game. He could play it over and over again until he turned eighty. When he finally gave me a sheepish grin, I struggled to not smile back. It was cute.

“Sorry about that,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “I was just really in to that game.”

With a raised eyebrow, I nodded. “I could tell.”

Colby let out a chuckle and motioned for me to follow him. We then walked through the park, Colby slowing down so that we could walk side by side, the trees welcoming us with leaves swaying against the breeze. Autumn was starting, and the trees were turning a pretty hue of yellows and oranges and browns. My foot caught some leaves on the ground, and I kicked them lightly, watching as they momentarily hung in the air before settling back down to the earth. I glanced at Colby out the corner of my eye and saw that he was doing the same thing. I smiled.

A memory came right then, one with Matty and my mom and my dad. My dad would let the leaves fall from the trees in our yard, and when he thought they were enough, he would rake them in to a pile and we would play in it, me and Matty. I remembered us having so much fun.
