A/N: So I wrote THHU this time last year but didn’t post it, but since it’s been two years since I joined wattpad tomorrow :O I thought to celebrate, I'd post it, so I hope you enjoy it. I think there are a few message to take away from it, but do let me know what you think!

I, Mia Winfield, had never, ever celebrated Halloween.

I had never gone trick or treating as a child, I had never carved pumpkins with my parents and I had never dressed up in overly slutty clothing as a witch or a nympho nurse for Halloween parties. However, this all changed when Halloween rolled around during my first term at university. As a university town, it quite simply embraced any chance to get the students out partying in their latest costume attire and Halloween was one festivity they were not missing out on. The streets were lined with advertisements to bring out the partying spirit, to dress up and enjoy the mystery shots they were providing.

Halloween had truly come to town.

But at least two weeks before this fateful day, I was asked by Gregory, one of my four other flatmates, ‘What are your plans for Halloween then, Miss Mia?’

I immediately flushed red at the question and admitted nervously, ‘I have none.’

Smiling, he answered easily, ‘We were thinking about heading into town for it. You know, dress up, pre drink, then head out for a good time at a club or two. Are you up for it?’

No.

Obviously I wasn’t that blunt with my answer, so I just shrugged and said nothing, awkwardly lifting my empty glass up to my lips to pretend to take a sip.

Well done, Mia.

Gregory thankfully didn’t mortify me even more, so let my lack of plans slide. It hadn’t even crossed my mind what to do for Halloween. I didn’t think it was a big deal. I, however, was in the minority. The majority took it as a major event in their social calendar they were not missing out on. Though to be fair, I wasn’t the party animal, and I didn’t particularly enjoy going out clubbing, so this idea made me palpitate a little.

The Halloween idea, thankfully, went to the back of my mind for a while, until Hallie, my neighbour a day or so later beamed, ‘I saw this AMAZING witches dress in the costume shop window! I just have to get it for Halloween. I just, have to!’ Smiling, she described it to me, not before adding in, ‘I think Jacob will like it too. Halloween is the perfect time to make a move.’

As she flicked the page of her magazine, I told her honestly, ‘I really think you should just tell him that you like him instead, Hallie, I mean, what could go wrong?’

She then laughed at me and cooed, ‘Oh yes, because you’ve told darling Carl you like him too, haven’t you?’

My cheeks went bright red and I whacked her over the head with my pillow, and squealed, ‘I do not like Carl!’

‘Oh whatever, Mia,’ she giggled, grabbing another pillow to defend herself.

‘I do not!’

‘Sure, sure. Whatever! You're smitten for him.'

As Hallie watched me closely, my thoughts involuntarily wandered off to Carl; the best friend of my flat mate, Gregory.

I met Carl on the first day that I was moving into university halls a few weeks earlier. I had brought everything but the kitchen sink with me, literally everything and was hopelessly struggling to bring my stuff up the stairs. My mum had gone AWOL trying to find a parking space as I had to lug three suitcases, a TV and massive hand luggage bags up two flights of stairs, all alone. I stood at the bottom, looking upwards helplessly, when I heard a friendly voice from behind.
