“Come,” a voice called sweetly.

Immediately I followed the urge that pulled me towards it and soon all four of us found ourselves in a rounded room with the mist creeping along the pale white floor.

A single golden throne sat at the opposite end of the room and a figure materialised in it.

With a gasp, I clutched Cale’s arm fearfully. What the hell?

“Do not be afraid, humans,” a voice floated out softly and warmly, reminding me of my mum.

We walked forward and from the moment we took a few more steps, four rounded seats hovered above the mist, materialising from the very mist.

“Sit,” she said softly, her golden eyes glistening anxiously.

She stood up and a purple robe trailed down to the floor and it seemed as though . . . as though there was no ground beneath her hidden feet.

Her matching pure silvery golden blonde hair brushed the tips of her shoulders softly.

“My name is Sidara, Guardian of the Portals,” she said, her voice ringing clearly. “You four are chosen by pure fate to wield the precious treasures of your planet.”

“Wait . . . no!” Felix exclaimed, tugging fistfuls of his dark auburn hair, stressed. “We’re still teens! How the hell do you expect us to . . . guard treasures of our own planet?!”

“And Portals? Portals to where?” Ashleigh questioned in a calmer tone though her blue eyes shone with questions, curiosity and fear.

“So many unanswered questions,” she crooned with a beautiful smile on her papery, beautiful face. “But we have such little time. There are four crystals of the Earth realm and you have passed the test to withstand the Water Crystal protector.”

“Drowning was our test?” I choked out and all eyes turned to me.

She shook her head slightly and the slight shake of her beautiful hair seemed to make the soft sounds of tinkling bells.

“It was a test of faith to those who are close to you,” she said, gesturing slightly with beautiful elongated fingers.

I blushed.

“It was you who had passed the test of Water, therefore you are chosen to wield the Water Crystal,” she said and gestured again but this time, her eyes were fixated on my hand that was clenched into a tight, numb fist at my side.

I looked down and my heart skipped a beat when I realised what she was staring at.

A crystal the size and shape of a golf-ball was squished in my palm. So I held it up in front of me and stretched out my fingers.

The bluish, silvery crystal glowed once before it started hovering above my palm, twinkling brightly.

“It has chosen you,” she repeated in a grave voice. “But because of fate, you are now aligned with a destiny that you must be committed to. Do you accept the battle?”

“Wait what?” Ashleigh squeaked, her blue eyes darting around frantically. “We can’t! I don’t know about you guys but I can’t handle a battle! My dad is stationed in Afghanistan and already he could die! My two grandmothers have died last year and to face a battle with probably millions more lives and blood on our hands . . .”

She closed her eyes and a tear leaked from the corner of her eyes.

“I can’t handle death anymore,” she whispered fiercely.

“There is no choice in this,” Sidara said sadly. “The Prophecies have foretold and you have been chosen, Ashleigh Elbane. I am sorry. Felix Zathe, Cale Alcot and Rosella Alcot, do you accept your fate?”
