The next morning Kelsey woke up to someone poking her arm. She tried to ignore it, but the persistent poking would not end. Turning slightly, she peered through half open eyelids to see Sage sitting on her side of the bed. Kelsey didn’t say anything because the look in her friends’ eyes told her all she needed to know.

Andrew knew. It didn’t bother her that he knew about what happened. No, what bothered the most would be the pity in his eyes. If Andrew and their father had their way, she would be taking online classes in the confines of their home in Elsie.

“I’m sorry,” Sage whispered. “You know I wouldn’t have said anything if he didn’t threaten to bring our fathers into it.”

Kelsey shook her head and patted Sage’s knee. “It’s okay, it would have happened sooner or later. And I would have done the same. If our father’s showed up, we would be driving back right now.” An involuntary shudder passed through her.

“Well, it’s time to get up,” Sage said remembering why she was awake so early instead of sleeping in. “We are going into town to look around. Cassidy also wants to introduce us to some of her friends.”

At the thought of going into a town that could be filled with people like Joshua had Kelsey cringing inwardly, but she pushed her thoughts to the back of her mind. ‘Who cares if they don’t like the way I look,’ she thought. ‘I like the way I look and I wouldn’t change it for the world.’ Repeating her mantra, Kelsey swung her legs off the bed and headed for the bathroom across the hall. She took a quick shower; blow dried her hair, brushed her teeth, got dressed, and was downstairs in half an hour.

Everyone was up and eating breakfast at the table. Andrew sat at the head of the table with Cassidy sitting on his right and Tommy on his left. Sage and Victoria sat next to Cassidy, talking quietly about what they were going to do once they were in town.

Andrew heard his sister come into the room. He looked up from his plate of food and gave her a dashing smile. After Sage told him what happened, he couldn’t be happier about how she handled the situation. He was peeved that someone actually came right out and said something like that to a stranger! He wanted to get the guys name and what town this happened in. He would gather a few men he has become close friends with when he married his beautiful wife. He and his friends would talk to the boy and hopefully get him to think before acting, although it would make him feel better if the boy received a few broken ribs and a broken leg or arm.

Andrew watched his sister as she sat down between his son and Jess. He couldn’t believe how beautiful she had grown over the past three years. He could see in her eyes that she was nervous of being in a new place and not knowing anyone. She forced the smiles on her face for everyone’s benefit. She had always been like this after their mother left when she was ten. Andrew remembers that day as if it happened the day before. Andrew learned a few years after Kelsey was born that his mother was unfaithful and a whore. His parents only married because she got pregnant with him. They couldn’t stand being near each other but they stuck it through for him.

One night he was staying the night over at his grandparents, and his parents were home, drunk. Nine months later Kelsey came into this world. That was the happiest day for Andrew and his father.

“Andrew, could you watch Tommy while we go shopping?” Cassidy asked, bringing him back to the present.

He nodded as he ruffled his son’s hair. “Not a problem. Me and this little guy have some unfinished business.” He gave Tommy a wink, which started jumping up and down in his chair.

“What unfinished business?” Cassidy asked curiously.

Andrew stood up shaking his head. “Nothing you need to worry about.” He tugged and pushed on all five girls, guiding them toward the door. Tommy helped by pushing on their legs. “You girls go shopping and have lunch. But you are not allowed to come back until 3.” He left no word for discussion as he closed the door in their face, locking the door behind him.
