I saw you there, looking scared and enflammed

You were just a boy, pale and fair

I was a girl, brown and detained

I was your "girlfriend," soft like your gaze, our love becoming rare

It was cold autumn when I asked to meet you, my heart quickening faster than a mare

We talked about past lives revealed, and you said my brown skin was beautiful, yourself looking arcane

We were teenagers, not children, so I hoped that at me you would not stare

I was not a year older than ye, trying hard to refrain

I placed my kiss on your lips, watching your eyes widen like as if you had been dared

On the hill, I cried. You hugged me, but, from you I wanted to abstain

I was your "girlfriend," soft like your gaze, our love becoming rare

I killed many buckets to reach you.

Liner Notes: This poem is about the teenager versions of Ashuton and Narcissus, two characters from my short story/poetry book, Dragons and Cicadas: The Society On Da Run (also known as Tarnished: Tales of Broken Dragons). Narcissus is African American, and she feels a little inferior to Ashuton, whom is the prince of Italy (and a dragon shifter). This poem records how she felt when he confessed his feelings for her on the hill. She called him there so she could confess and was surprised when he did. Rhyme poetry is not my strong point. I much prefer free verse. (c) 2012 by L'Poni Baldwin.
