PROLOGUE
I never did find out what happened to me.
I’m insane. Crazy.
What happened to make me like this?
Too much red cordial, maybe. Or my mom dropped me too many times as a baby. But I’m completely nuts, and that’s the way I like it.
Only the best people are crazy.
Now, where are my manners? Oh yeah! I don’t have any! Well, since you’re reading this, you might as well know my name…
It’s Emilee by the way.
So, I guess I should start my story.
Once I was an ordinary girl. I had two of the best friends in the whole world. They were secretly in love with each other but would never ever admit it aloud. So, naturally, I had to play matchmaker. I got them together in eighth grade.
And they died before we started freshman year.
Too sudden for the start of the story? Well deal with it. Their deaths are what started this whole bloody thing! Because of their deaths my ‘parents’ sent me away to try and live on my own. Of course, I was fine with that. They weren’t really very good parents anyways. The only person in my family that I really loved was my little sister Tayla- and that was because I didn’t really know her. My stepdad didn’t really like me talking to anyone that was related to him.
Okay, so now I’m really going to start my story. This is what happened on the day I was sent away…
12th of April three years ago, 26 Baker Street- New York
Bianca is dead, Emilee, she was hit by a drunk driver.
I repeated over and over in my head. Shouldn’t this be, like, working? I thought that mental chanting was meant to help the victim!! This is just making me more depressed!!
Hayden is dead, Emilee, he committed suicide.
Not helping brain. Seriously.
‘EMILEE!’ my stepdad shouted. Sighing, I slid out of my bed and walked down to the kitchen. Mom was sitting at the table, Tayla in her arms. Peter, my stepdad, glared at me.
‘What is it?’ I asked. Tayla grinned happily at me, her dark black eyes shining. She was way too young and innocent to understand how horrible her father is. In fact, she’s only just turned three. Yet, even in her youth, you could tell that she looked exactly like my mother, so she looked a bit like me.
‘We’re sick of you moping around,’ Peter slurred. I could smell the alcohol from here.
‘Bianca and Hayden are dead, sweetie.’ My mom stated. ‘It’s time for you to move on.’
My mom didn’t really care about me. She hasn’t since the moment my real dad left her.
Still, how could she expect me to get over their deaths? She hasn’t even gotten over my father leaving yet! It’s been fourteen bloody years and she still hasn’t gotten over it! And she expects me to get over the only two people in my life that cared about me dying? It’s only been three days since Bianca died, and only one since Hayden committed suicide. How could she expect me to just go on with my life?
‘Mom, I-’
‘I’ve had enough, Emilee!’ Peter shouted, interrupting me. ‘The devil’s spawn is within you but that still gives you no right to act this way!’
Yeah, Pete, just pull out the ‘Dad’ card. We all just know that you’re just pissy because Mom dated a guy before you (a much hotter one, at that). The only reason they think of him as the devil is because he left my mother while she was pregnant with me. But I personally think that that’s her fault, since she didn’t even tell him she was having his kid.
‘Act what way, Peter? My best friends just died, I think I have the right to be a little bit sad!’ okay, shouting at a drunken Peter is not a smart thing to do. But he started it!
‘Janice, take Tayla outside.’ My stepfather ordered, his bloodshot eyes glaring at me.
As soon as Mom left the room he slapped me.
‘You have no right to speak to me like that!’ he shouted and punched me in the stomach. Ouch.
I was flung into the wall, and felt a couple of my ribs break. Double ouch. I slid down onto the floor with a loud thump, looking up at Peter’s satisfied gaze.
‘Your mother and I have decided to send you to a well known boarding school.’
He has to be kidding.
‘It’s specially designed for troubled teens- I’m sure you’ll meet a lot of friends there.’ He explained with a giddy smile on his face. Of course he’s happy about shipping me off, and then he’ll have his perfect family.
