The squealing stopped and all was silent. The only thing I could hear was the gasping of my own breath. Then someone shouted "Stupid mutt!" and I could hear the car driving off again.
I slowly peeked through my fingers, fearing the worse.
Judging by the skids on the road, the car had swerved at the last second and narrowly missed the dog, which was still standing in the same spot, looking shocked.
"Here, boy." I whispered, my voice trembling as I ran up to him. He scuttled up to me with his tail in between his legs. I gave him a reassuring pat on the head.
"Don't worry buddy, we're nearly home.

I slowly opened the front door, wincing when the hinges squeaked.
If my parents found me like this, they would either scream and call the police, or ground me and take the dog to the nearest pound. I imagined what I would look like to them. A disappointment? I was wearing a black tracksuit and matching beanie. It felt awesome; like I was an undercover agent.
The dog slipped between the gap in the door and padded along the wooden floor, his long claws clicking loudly on the hard surface.
"Shh!" I raised one finger in front of my pursed lips. He looked back at me and seemed confused. "Over here." I tip-toed up the stairs towards my room, beckoning for him to follow.
When we got to my room, I closed the door behind me, kicked off my shoes and flopped onto my bed.
I groaned, feeling exhaustion weigh down on me.
The dog jumped up beside me and lay down. He snuggled closer to me and I stroked his head.
"You need a name." I mumbled sleepily. He stared up at me with big, brown eyes.
"Tobi. With an 'i' not a 'y'. Yeah, Tobi."
Tobi licked my faced and looked satisfied with his new name.
"Goodnight, Tobi." I yawned myself into unconsciousness, not even bothering to get changed.
