Chapter Twenty Eight

I was stood outside Nana's house. My eyes were solely focused on the yellow roses that she had growing on her front porch. The red tips had caught my attention as I pressed the doorbell. I hadn't noticed Nana had opened the door, watching me stare at the roses with admiration. Then I felt a dull ache in my heart as they brought back so many memories of Drake.

"They're beautiful aren't they?" Nana's voice was soft.

I nodded my head lightly.

"My favourites would be the lavender roses," I turned to see her smile, a distant smile.

"Why?" I asked curiously.

"The first time me and my husband went on our first date he brought me the lavender rose. It was beautiful and when he told me it meant love at first sight, I knew he was the one for me," Nana's voice sounded so far away, her eyes misty with longing.

"I..." my voice trailed off as my eyes widened in realisation. My head snapped back towards the yellow rose, Drake's last words echoing in my mind, 'Yellow...red tips...rose... read...meaning.'

"Nana?" My voice was slightly uncertain.

"Hmm?" she looked at me warmly. The weather was nice out as we stood on her front porch. I had an hour before sunset to spend my time with her and Tommy.

"Do you know what the yellow rose means? The one with the red tips?" I asked. I felt nervous all of a sudden. My mind thought of all the possibilities. The one that was sticking out the most was that it was a way of Drake saying he didn't like me in that way, that there was no chance of us to go further than our current relationship- perhaps just friendship is what he wanted. I had serious insecurity issues. I shook my head as I focused my attention on Nana. A sudden gleam in her eyes and an adorable smile graced her lips as she whispered, "Falling in love."

I stared at her blankly for a whole minute.

Then I blinked.

"What?"

"You asked what it means and I'm telling you it means falling in love," she smiled before ushering me inside as a cold breeze swept our way.

I allowed my feet to lead the way towards Tommy. He was sat in the living room. I smiled at him drawing with a look of pure concentration. It seemed like he was finishing of the picture so when I reached him, he abandoned the crayons and grinned up at me.

"Perfect timing Rosie," he said before shoving the paper into my hands.

I looked at him questionably with a smile before it slipped off as I looked down at the picture he drew. I bit the inside of my cheeks, forcing myself to stay strong as I slumped down on the sofa. Tommy crawled onto my lap as I stared at the picture with an aching heart.

"Do you like it?" Tommy asked, grinning down at the picture in my slightly trembled hands.

How is that a simple picture of me and Drake holding hands whilst Ana, Tommy and Cathy smiled together in the picture like a happy family, hit so hard?

It was too late. It was too late to stop Tommy from growing attached to Drake and his family. If I couldn't get Drake back, then I've failed. I would be the reason for Tommy's loss of another man in his life.
