To summarize the previous scenes: The CodeSlingers (master computer programmers) have just learnt that their company is being sold and that everyone will be laid off except for them. They've been offered "retention bonuses" - meaning that for a large sum of money, they will agree not to go to work for a competitor.
Characters in this scene:
Snobahl: The Human Resource VP who doesn't care a fig about his employees
Woodruff: Mild mannered technical writer worried about losing his low paying job
TexAnnie: flamboyant, athletic blond. The engineers are all in love with her but none of them can quite keep up with her.
Marco: The romantic CodeSlinger - always falling in love and then running away from it.
Assorted other employees
Setting: Snobahl has called a mandatory all hands meeting in a large conference room. A powerpoint presentation is projected on the wall with pictures of the VCs. The employees have heard rumors about layoffs and are nervously whispering amoungst themselves.
Snobahl:
As you probably already know -
for a pile of stock,
and a ton of dough,
the company's been sold,
And some of us will go.
(The crowd begins to mumble.)
I know you have questions,
which I cannot answer now,
but we have a handy website,
with lots of Q and A.
Ask us any questions,
We’ll respond without delay!
We’ve got a good team in place,
so there’s no need for fear,
Just trust in the system,
trust in the system!
And it will be all be clear.
The future will be wonderful, wonderful
and profits will be huge.
So keep your eye on ball,
your shoulder to the wheel.
It’s business as usual!
No matter how you feel!
Woodruff nervously raises his hand:
Oh, please kind sir,
don't leave me in limbo
I have to know if I'm the one to go.
Where am I on your list,
of the company’s worst and best?
Will I get an offer,
or shown the door?
Snobahl, clearing his throat:
We’ve got a good team in place,
so there’s no need for fear.
Just trust in the system,
trust in the system!
And it will be soon be clear,
the future will wonderful, Wonderful
