Trisha16087, this one is for you.
Guess what, readers? This actually happened. I had an actual conversation with someone about this.
"Oh, look, those people are migrating down the sidewalk."
"... Pardon?"
"I said, oh, look, those people are migrating down the sidewalk."
"Migrating? You used migrating?"
"Yes. So?"
"Who uses the word migrate when talking about people who're crossing the street?"
"Hey, shut up! It works!"
"Well, yeah, but it's unorthodox. What kind of person uses the word 'migrate' for that kind of purpose?"
"Says the guy who uses the word 'sick' for 'cool'."
"That's slang. It's different."
"Whatever, man. It's all the same to me."
"So does this mean that I can use 'migrate' to talk about this kind of thing?"
"What? No! You can't! It's my word. You can't use it."
"Your word?"
"Yes, my word! I came up with the meaning and I'm the one who uses it! It's mine!"
"So what? I might as well. It's not like you could stop me."
"I'll sue!"
"Wait, wh - over what?!?"
"Copyright!"
"What?!"
"That word is copyright!"
