Chapter-36

I didn’t realize you were so embarrassed of me, Cariño.

The words reverberated in the tiny constrains of the car, not registering in Amelia’s mind for a minute before they shattered the uneasy calm. She glanced at him askance, “Embarrassed?”

Lucius snorted, “Don’t get smart with me, Mia…”

“I’m not… just- I… I don’t follow… why would you even think-?... I mean-” she trailed off, unwilling to put ideas in his head if they were not already present.

“You mean?”He parroted.

Trust Lucius to pick up on what she did not feel like sharing.

I mean, you are the one shackled with a dimwit, unemployed spouse. Me, on the other hand? I get the amazingly brilliant, successful debonair attorney… So if either one of us were to have a grievance, it’s most definitely not me.”

The hint of a smile graced his lips at her description of him, but naturally he had to single out the part of her declaration that she wanted to glaze over. “I don’t stand for people talking down to my wife!”

She could not help the relieved giggle at that, “For how long?”

“Excuse me?”

“How long before you get tired of me, Lucius?”

For one interminably long moment, Lucius refused to answer; then checking the rearview for oncoming traffic he pulled over at the nearest secluded spot he could find.

“Alright, Cariño… what’s going on?”

His sapphire eyes were guileless and worried as he focused his entire attention on her. She blushed, bending her head to hide behind the curtain of hair; only he was having none of that. Reaching out, he gently tipped her head- forcing her to lock gazes with him. He quirked an eyebrow; wordlessly urging her to answer his query.

“Nothing.” She mumbled.

“Hey, none of that now. You were fine when I dropped you off earlier today, so what happened? Did somebody say something?”

A part of her wanted to laugh at how paternal he sounded- worried about his niña.

Sheshookher head, “No...I- uh- I wasspeakingto Miranda and she- shepointedoutsome home-truths.”

“And?”

Amelia raised her eyes, meeting his probing gaze head-on. “Lucius, I saw you and Judy together, alright? You were discussing cases... I- I have no clue about law. I mean, I would love to hear about your work- and I know that you would be willing to share the details with me... but Lucius- I- I cannot discuss them with you. I don’t know how to be your sounding-board...and since I don’t work myself- I- I have no clue about... well, all of that. And...and-”

“Mia, breath.”

She gulped in some much needed oxygen, suddenly aware that she had forgotten to inhale while delivering her diatribe. Blushing she looked at him. Lucius’ gaze was amused, indulgent even.

“First things first, okay? All this nonsense about me tiring of you? It’s exactly that- nonsense. And I you are my sounding board, Cariño… if you knew the same things that I did, what would be the point in asking you? Just because you don’t know legalese doesn’t mean you can’t help. In fact, sometimes it’s essential to take a step back from all that to find the solution which had been staring us in the face all along. And you do that.” He paused, “And as far as working is concerned, do I assume that you have changed your mind? You want to get a job?”

Something in his tone made her pause, “You don’t want me to work?”

“It’s your choice, Cariño… whether you choose to work, or further your education or even stay at home- the only thing I’m concerned about is your happiness. Don’t start working just because you are feeling insecure, Mia.”

She nodded. It was good advice.
